Can't wait for @sadiahqureshi.bsky.social's new book! Now more than ever we need her uncompromising analysis & her unwavering love for earth & its beings. If you're into #ecology, #extinction, #anticolonial #environmentalism, #envhistory, #envhumanities, #geography it's going to be a must-read
My dedication and acknowledgments include people whose extinction I’m mourning to a little one who wasn’t even born as I wrote about them and awaited news of their birth. It feels only right for a book about incredible ways of being, loss, unjust historical legacies and choosing a just future.
Slowly taking shape into a book. Over the moon with the 🐧 colour scheme which just happens to be 🐯 themed too for proofs.

More info here, including links to preorder. www.penguin.co.uk/books/309254...

In two weeks, there will be fewer than 100 days to go.

Launch event TBC, but more ASAP.

The draining of The Fens was not uncontroversial, with locals rioting, harassing workers, and sabotaging drainage works for around two centuries from the 1600s to 1800s

Here's the story of one successful instance of resistance in Soham

Is Lake Superior actually a lake, or a sea pretending?

It's a lake in English, but it's “Ojibwa’s Great Sea” in Ojibwe, an apt name given it's the world's largest freshwater body

Superior's sea-ness has made it useful for shipping, with lakers like the Edmund Fitzgerald hauling Minnesota iron ore

Did you know some fish are migrants?

Some like salmon are "anadromous": they're born in rivers, live at sea, and return to rivers to spawn

Others like eels are "catadromous": they do the opposite

These migrations are vital to cultures like Alaska's Tlingit, who catch 1000s of salmon during a run

Do you know why you always see palm trees at an oasis? It's no accident

Purposefully cultivated by farmers, date palms are what make oases possible in the deserts of West Asia and North Africa

They provide dates, but also shade, creating a microclimate that retains water and allows plants to grow

How much can you make out of a reed? If you're the Uru people of Lake Titicaca, quite a lot

Calling themselves Titicaca's true owners, the Uru build much of their lives using the totora reeds lining its shores

This includes ~120 inhabited, movable floating islands historically built for defense

Is the most interesting man in the US river world?

For forty years Henry Shreve plied America's western rivers, and was the first to bring a steamboat from the Ohio to New Orleans and back in 1815

This proved steam worked, and broke Robert Fulton's attempt to monopolize the steamship trade (1/2)

You've heard of its gold, but do you know the real reason the Mali Empire emerged where it did?

Running through the arid Sahel, the Upper Niger River has served as a cradle of empires for centuries

Known for its port Timbuktu, the river is also home to the Songhai, whose war canoes conquered it

What do you see when you look at a lake? For the besieged of Leningrad, they saw a road

From 1941-1943, the Soviets used roads built on frozen Lake Ladoga to supply the city during its 900-day siege

Moving >500,000 MT of supplies and evacuating 1.3 million, the route was named the Road of Life

Did you know Native Hawaiians can farm the sea?

Since ~1200 CE, they've built ~500 fish ponds (loko i'a) in Hawaii, with the largest consisting of seawalls that trap fish to be fattened on algae

Unfortunately, colonization ended most, with a loko i'a center at Pearl Harbor destroyed by a US base

Is more water better for farming? Depends on who you ask in Sudan's Gezira Scheme

Built on the Blue Nile under British rule, it's one of the world's largest irrigation schemes

It produces lots of cotton, but its state-run system took local farmers' land and is one of the world's least efficient

Did you know England used to have its own Cajun Country? Sort of

The Fens are a low-lying area of England once dominated by wetlands

This difficult terrain made it a haven, with monks and others seeking refuge escaping to it since the Romans

But it was drained in the 1800s and is now mostly farms
