Great to see this from National Life Stories @britishlibrary.bsky.social Paul Merchant drawing on our collaborative work @renewbiodiversity.bsky.social! Fascinating stories from community #environmentalism of 1980s-90s, drawing out the nuances and dilemmas of industrial funding. #envhums #histSTM
"Many environmental organisations in Britain in the 1980s and 1990s were sponsored by companies, including oil companies."

Paul Merchant uses oral history to examine the links between corporate sponsorship and environmental activism in 1980s and 1990s Britain.

Reposting for attention of #envhist #envhums #STS #HistSTM folks, can anyone help? Amazing story and a vital longitudinal datastream that needs continuity and care
I'm a data scientist @ourworldindata.org and I need help from a botanist or someone local to Kyoto, Japan! 🌸

We present one of the world’s longest climate records: 1,200 years of peak cherry blossom dates in Kyoto.

The researcher who maintained it, Prof. Yasuyuki Aono, sadly passed away last year.

Donald MacKenzie on visions of infinite scaling in tech: "AI’s scale doesn’t matter just to specialists. The rest of us are being taken on a ride along the logarithmic curve too." The Hudson Transparencies are large images on paper screens, which in the 19th century were lit from behind and used as visual aids to teach about microscopic organisms.

Cross posting this to alert colleagues in #scicomm #sts #envhums #scipol about alarming developments at the BBC Written Archive. So many fundamental studies in these areas have drawn on this resource; it would be disastrous to lose access to it.
For reasons, it would be v. helpful to have information from a broad range of academic and non-academic (incl. GLAM) users of the BBC Written Archives OTHER THAN historians, briefly on: 1) What you've used it for and 2) How the proposed changes would impact on your research.

Reposts welcomed.

Can envisage a super interesting comparative #STS #EnvHums #scipol study exploring this case alongside ash dieback. Similar underlying situations; playing out across contrasting economic, social and ecological interconnections/interactions.
Misleading: BBC website users reading this headline would worry that the UK's native woods were under threat. In fact the Spruce Bark Beetle feeds on different kinds of Spruce, as the name suggests.

There are no native species of Spruce in the UK.

Headline should read UK's spruce plantations.
