Something Madeline Miller said once has been on my mind a lot lately. Basically, she explained that as soon as epic poems like THE ILLIAD hit the ancient streets, people were doing reboots and remixes of them.
We’ve been rebooting heroic epics as long as we’ve had heroic epics.

Thing about working with famous epics is that they're famous epics for a reason. Tons of people have had opinions about them for millennia. If you're going to work with one, you know your version is going to piss some people off. Even a *sedate* famous epic inflames some of its audience.

Also fundamentally, most depictions of warfare are stuck in WW2 via 1960s action schlock/historical epics
Sort of funny that naval combat lending itself to less compelling imagery than men personally trying to kill each other means that most people think of the military as being armies or naval infantry rather than navies, despite navies often being way more important strategically

of the dodgy odyssey takes, 'odysseus is meant to be a stoic badass unaffected by war' probably winds me up the most. in the text the king of the phaeacians correctly guesses odysseus is a veteran of the trojan war because he keeps bursting into tears whenever anyone mentions it

There was a period of time when NBC would put out these miniseries based on public domain epics with the most stacked cast you’ve ever seen and then schools would show them to 7th graders for the next 20 years and it was kinda paradise
Tonight's viewing. Haven't seen this since it first came out in 1998.

If they're going to do historical epics with US accents, it should be a made up accent. They should all sound like American newsreaders.
OK, it makes no more sense to give Odysseus an American or a British accent BUT you have to remember that the RADA voice that Patrick Stewart's lot have is a made up accent for doing Shakespeare in. It's vaguely posh, but its main connotation is "the olden days". So it does work a bit better.
