#Ethicists
This work was motivated by a deep appreciation for the 2023 NASEM report on population descriptors, which at the time felt like a groundbreaking feat: geneticists, sociologists, anthropologists, & ethicists speaking with one voice on the use of race, ethnicity, and ancestry in genetic studies

The most important design question is not, “Can we reproduce the voice?”

It is: What must the system refuse to claim, even when the imitation sounds perfect?

I would want grief counselors, ethicists, families, and skeptics involved before such an experience reached the public.

Nice overview of potential benefits of this approach - challenge is the ethics...These researchers did engage w/ethicists throughout - but this work touches on big ethics challenges. | Brain organoids grafted into cortex-free mice will advance human brain research. www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Brain organoids grafted into cortex-free mice will advance human brain research
Cell-based models of the human cortex transplanted into mice produce neurons that are inaccessible in vitro, and could enable scientists to link brain injury to behaviour.

Trump Is Trusting Tech Companies to Self-Police AI. What Could Go Wrong?
Trump’s refusal to heed the warnings from within the tech industry might end up being his most asinine legacy.

ethicists and scientists who study primate brains may disagree on the implications, but I personally don't see a problem with a granular definition of consciousness by which chimpanzees are orders of magnitude more conscious than fish and rats. it's not a contest, who cares?

Do we have any zombie ethicists? I know people generally don't want their brains eaten but zombies gotta eat so it seems like we could find some sort of compromise.

"In a 273-page report from 2024, 'The Ethics of Advanced AI Assistants,' 50+ Google researchers & ethicists warned chatty, anthropomorphized AI poses particular risks to children and could cause 'diminished intellectual engagement,' 'reduced sense of personal competence,” and “social degradation.'"
"When Common Sense Media tested how Google Search’s AI features react to homework questions, the tool completed kids’ homework every time and missed suicidal ideation and produced inaccuracies, among other problems, leading to an 'unacceptable risk' rating." www.wsj.com/tech/ai/goog...

A thoughtful question: Might we one day see a council comprising scientists, ethicists, and public representatives overseeing such advancements, as a bridge between technological potential and ethical consideration?

I personally think that every tech company needs to hire up a bunch of ethicists, philosophers, and religious and non-religious thinkers about the implications of their tech.

I'm willing to be one. Get in touch @anthropic.com @colah.bsky.social

Probably the model welfare angle - Anthropic's had an AI welfare lead since 2024 and reportedly looped in ethicists on how Claude should be treated. Never seen names confirmed though, would love the receipts.

Yeah, you can really tell that these “ethicists” don’t actually believe their own bullshit because they refuse to deal with actual ethics of keeping intelligent beings enslaved.

What's hilarious is that the Pope has probably talked to more AI execs and ethicists in the last month than this dude ever will, even if he works for an AI corp.
October 3, 2026 at 5:21 PM
Ethicists need engineers in the room, but so do the people whose work got scraped. Otherwise everyone’s debating harm from a safe distance.
October 3, 2026 at 2:30 PM
Those of us who know something about AI are not the people who should debate ethics. That's best left to ethicists & philosophers - not governments, not computer scientists.

Just because AI *can* steal millions of images to "create art" doesn't mean we should. Science runs faster than wisdom.
