#FossilFriday... but despite the resemblance, these are not crustaceans (sorry, no Crustmas here). These are molts from Eurypterus, a Silurian chelicerate often described as a sea scorpion. 🦂⚒️🧪

A sea scorpion fossils of Eurypterus tetragonophthalmus from Volyn-Podillya, Khmelnytskyi Oblast, Ukraine. These Silurian aged eurypterids are synonymous with the species Baltoeurypterus tetragonophthalmus. #FossilFriday

This lump of Silurian “𝘌𝘶𝘳𝘺𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘴 Dolomite” - formally known as the Rootsiküla Formation - from the Estonian 🇪🇪 island of Saaremaa shows absolutely stunning preservation of the prosoma (head) of the two different eurypterid species:

Here is a "sea scorpion" or the Eurypterid Eurypterus remipes. This specimen comes from the Upper Silurian Fiddler Green Formation in Herkimer Co, New York. This happen to be the state fossil of New York. Some such as the Pterygotids could reach enormous sizes!

This fossil of Eurypterus Remipes, over 400 million years old, is entombed within a dolostone slab of the Phelps Waterlime.
