So it turns out my #EvolutionaryMedicine class lectures today and Wednesday are on vaccination and vaccine design.

Thanks Nobel for giving me a nice new angle to introduce the topic this morning.

An undergrad in my #EvolutionaryMedicine class contacted me after this weeks' disease phylodynamics class, asking about what careers exist at the intersection of phylogenetics and epidemiology & what entry level jobs exist for undergrads. I told her the little I know... any suggestions?

Just posted what I expect to be the final shiny app for my #EvolutionaryMedicine class:
bolnicklab.shinyapps.io/antibiotic_c...
2 bacterial strains w exponential growth at different rates, w/ different antibiotic sensitivity. Students can set a ab treatment: duration, combinations, cycling

Myopia is a classic example of a disorder caused by mismatch with modern environments. The genes that make it more likely are not defects, they are genetic quirks that cause harm only in modern environments.

New addition to the Shiny App collection I'm making to teach #EvolutionaryMedicine:
bolnicklab.shinyapps.io/SIRapp/
An SIR model allowing users to adjust starting numbers of susceptible, resistant, infected cases, death rates, transmission rates, recovery rates, etc.

The mismatch between our evolved biology and modern environments contributes to many health problems from obesity and allergies to mental health challenges.

ISEMPH members are researching these evolutionary mismatches and what they mean for prevention and treatment.

What happens when evolution meets medicine?

We need to better understand disease, cancer evolution, pregnancy biology, and how ancient adaptations still shape human health.

Why do humans experience more difficult childbirth compared to other primates?

The obstetrical dilemma (balancing bipedalism, brain size, and pelvic anatomy) is a classic example of evolutionary trade-offs that affect health.
