The mismatch between our evolved biology and modern environments contributes to many health problems from obesity and allergies to mental health challenges.

ISEMPH members are researching these evolutionary mismatches and what they mean for prevention and treatment.

Myopia is a classic example of a disorder caused by mismatch with modern environments. The genes that make it more likely are not defects, they are genetic quirks that cause harm only in modern environments.

ISEMPH brings together evolutionary biologists, physicians, epidemiologists, anthropologists, and public health professionals.

This interdisciplinary mix is what makes evolutionary medicine so powerful. Different perspectives lead to better questions and better solutions.

Why do humans get so many chronic diseases? How does understanding our evolutionary past help us address modern health crises?

These are questions ISEMPH members explore every day. Follow us for insights from researchers working at the frontiers of evolutionary medicine.

What happens when evolution meets medicine?

We need to better understand disease, cancer evolution, pregnancy biology, and how ancient adaptations still shape human health.

Cancer is an evolutionary process happening within our bodies. Understanding how cancer cells evolve can help us develop better prevention and treatment strategies.

This intersection of evolution and oncology is an active area of research in evolutionary medicine.
