New international coalition establishes shared principles for responsible research into ocean iron-based carbon removal
New York (Sept. 25, 2026) — As scientists and policymakers increasingly consider environmentally based approaches to climate mitigation, a new international coalition of research organizations is calling for rigorous, coordinated study of ocean iron fertilization (OIF) and its potential role in marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The ExOIS Field Research Coalition, convened by Exploring Ocean Iron Solutions (ExOIS), brings together independent organizations developing OIF field programs in different regions of the global ocean. The coalition aims to advance scientific understanding through greater coordination, information sharing, transparency, and common standards for responsible research. Founding members have signed a voluntary charter committing to scientific excellence, environmental stewardship, transparency and scientific independence, collaborative learning, and research conducted in the public interest. In addition, members have committed not to seek direct financial gain from their research during the experimental phase, including through the sale of carbon credits and offsets, helping to ensure that research findings remain impartial and independent. The coalition also recognizes that OIF and other ocean-based climate-mitigation techniques remain areas of active scientific investigation. Their potential effectiveness, environmental impacts, risks, and broader implications require continued research and careful evaluation before conclusions can be drawn about their suitability or scalability as climate-mitigation strategies...

🌊 This spring, ExOIS connected with partners across Europe. Paul Morris presented on next-generation OIF field trials at #EGU26 in Vienna and visited GEOMAR (Kiel) and the Alfred Wegener Institute (Bremerhaven). Thanks for the valuable discussions advancing #OceanIronFertilization science for #mCDR.

Ocean iron fertilization is one of the trickiest mCDR pathways to verify. Export flux below the mixed layer, remineralization depth, and ecosystem effects all complicate durability claims. Glad to see ExOIS putting principles up front.

🌊 The ExOIS consortium is committed to applying the most rigorous and independent science to evaluating ocean iron fertilization as a method of mCDR. The community needs high-quality data aimed at reducing uncertainty on these types of biotic changes.
Rather than repeating crazy headlines, everyone should read the paper, which suggests ocean iron fertilization could remove 200 Gt of atmospheric CO2, with only a 3% reduction in ocean oxygen. Let’s not be hasty in deciding which solutions are best until we have more research on all mCDR approaches🌊
