We loved participating in the annual UCM Research Festival at the Villa Marina last week. This wonderful event always brings together people with passion for the Isle of Man's heritage and culture, and allows us to showcase the rich resources of our archives. #ManxArchives #ExploreYourArchive

Before folklore was written down, it was shared through stories. For this month's #ExploreYourArchive theme, folklore, we're celebrating Ellen Sloggett (1850-1923), better known as Enys Tregarthen, whose writing helped preserve tales passed down in North Cornwall.

We are happy to say that last week the JCNA hosted secondary school students for a tour of our facility and to try their hand to condition survey our letter books and answer research queries. We always encourage all ages to come and visit the Archives!

We can document the construction of important buildings in our community and how their uses have changed throughout time. For example, the Stanley House main building was originally the FIC Colonial Manager’s House in 1878.

The county gaol in Carmarthen was designed by the architect John Nash, and built in about 1790
It's been demolished, but fortunately, photographers from the National Building Record captured this image of the front entrance in 1933

For #EYAErased we thought we'd share this will from 1568 recently produced from our strongrooms for an enquirer. The dirt is so ingrained into this piece of parchment that we have to be careful when cleaning it as ink sits on top of the parchment and could be easily erased!

Lucy Marx shares her reflections on her time as on the @EHRI placement at Southampton this summer working on letters of German Jewish internees during the Second World War. @Parkes @exploreyourarchive
User Perspectives: Lucy Marx on the Letters of Gerhard and Fritz Kaufmann
“All’s well that ends well” – Gerhard Kaufmann, during internment on the Isle of Man, in letters to his parents, Fritz and Elizabeth Kaufmann. Over the summer, I was fortunate to work on a project creating enhanced catalogue descriptions for part of the collection of Gerhard Kaufmann (born 27th July 1900, in Mannheim), a German Jewish refugee interned on the Isle of Man from late-June or early-July 1940 to 4th June 1941, who would later go on to work as a translator at the Nuremberg Trials.
