Here's the new WIP update of the Eye of Terror / Abaddon project.

I'm very much in the middle of figuring out how to best place the fire. Conceptually it is engulfing the black legion below, and reaching about halfway up Abby's body.

Image of the current WIP state of the Abaddon project. By now I have more paint on the piece, newly added is a larger area in red, orange and yellow tones, which are a first WIP state of the fire effect mapped out and essentially mid-planning. Side-by-side comparison of the close-up image of the current WIP state of the Abaddon project. On the left is my miniature interpretation of the art on the right, the original and iconic warhammer artwork "eye of terror" by Karl Kopinski. Four hours painting one face.
Paid off I reckon 😅

The rest of the osl is just the first bit of light placement sketching. It'll look much better eventually!

Close-up image of the current WIP state of my miniature painting interpretation of the original and iconic warhammer artwork "eye of terror" by Karl Kopinski. It shows the face and chest area of abaddon the despoiler. A lot of it is still just primed black, but the face and some of the armor detail is now painted in red and yellow osl with a purple backlight. Side-by-side comparison of the close-up image of the current WIP state of the Abaddon project. On the left is my miniature interpretation of the art on the right, the original and iconic warhammer artwork "eye of terror" by Karl Kopinski. Both are zoomed in on the face and chest area of abaddon the despoiler. It is now painted in red and yellow osl with a purple backlight to closely resemble the iconic artwork. WIP state of my miniature painting interpretation of the original and iconic warhammer artwork "eye of terror" by Karl Kopinski. The face and chest area of abaddon the despoiler is now painted in red and yellow osl with a purple backlight and the planet that is being crushed by the power claw is painted in blue green and white as well, while rifts in the planets surface are painted yellow orange and red. The rest of the model, the backdrop and the many little epic scale marines are unpainted and still primed black.

It is done!!

Inspired by the 2003 codex cover art "Eye of Terror" by Karl Kopinski

Made for a local painting challenge with Abaddon assigned per dice roll and the theme "treasure". (crushing Cadia is a "treasured moment" for him 😇)

Full frontal photograph of the finished "Eye of Terror" piece based on the iconic artwork by Karl Kopinsky. It features Abaddon the Despoiler, standing in flames surrounded by his black legion - visualized through converted epic scale marines - holding and crushing the planet Cadia in front of a backdrop that shows the Eye of Terror spiral galaxy in pink, magenta, purple and blue coloration. Close-up photograph of the sword Drach'nyen, which is part of the "Eye of Terror" miniature piece based on the iconic artwork by Karl Kopinsky. I've spent yet another long session just painting red, orange and yellow to expand the fire osl to the remaining parts - mainly the cape (inside and out) - and refined the second boot.

It's coming along nicely I think.

Current WIP state of the Abaddon project based on the original Artwork by Karl Kopinski "Eye of Terror". Close-up on the right side leg and surrounding fabrics. The Despoiler is painted mostly black with red, orange and yellow blends of bottom-up shining fire OSL. Current WIP state of the Abaddon project based on the original Artwork by Karl Kopinski "Eye of Terror". He is holded a sculpted planet in his power claw, painted to look like cadia but with cracks in the crust. The backdrop is freehand painted with mostly stipples and glazes, to resemble the Eye of Terror spiral galaxy with a big rift opening up from the center of the spiral galaxy and toward the bottom right. It is pink, purple and blue with a bright white center and surrounded by black space covered in different sizes of white dots - stars. At Abaddons feet are a number of epic scale marines converted to look like black legion, who are also mostly black and orange.

Just like Abaddon to ponder the orb so hard he crushed it... tisk tisk tisk...

Used weekday evenings to finish converting the epic scale marines and then painted Cadia on stream :)

4 square panels all showing the same sculpted and painted sphere that is being crushed by a power claw. the model wearing said claw is abaddon and all primed black. the planet is painted with green continents and blue oceans under white clouds that swirl and flow across the surface. near the claws that are supposed to tear into the planets surface are rifts painted in yellow, orange and red. square image that is divided in one 2:1 frame in the upper half and two smaller square frames in the bottom half. they're all showing the same group of chaos converted legio imperialis space marines. they are all primed black just like the plinth and half visible miniature of Abaddon the despoiler. vertically split side-by-side comparison image showing the current WIP state of my miniature painting interpretation (left side) and the original and iconic warhammer artwork "eye of terror" by Karl Kopinski (right side). They both depict Abaddon the despoiler crushing the planet Cadia in his power claw with his Black legion marching below him in smaller scale and the eye of terror, a purple, blue and pink warp rift in the galaxy behind him. On my WIP depiction the latter has yet to be painted on the backdrop and everything but the planet is merely primed black at this time as well. vertically split image showing different angles of the full piece as previously described in the post and other images alt texts. the left 1:2 ratio frame shows the full piece from the full front while the right fram shows it at a 45° angle.

The main warhammer subs are generally more welcoming. The elements who vehemently oppose this have decamped to r/eyeofterror

r/EyeofTerror is genuinely the worst Wh40k subreddit. Bunch of edgy men making transphobic and sexist posts under the guise of "no censorship". It's kinda curious that to these people "no censorship" just means pure bigotry. It's only a matter of time before their sub gets banned.

So spied a Chrono Anomaly in the Gudrun (Abnett) System. What’s the story with this? Is it something in one of the Abnett books i have not read? A sign of things to come? A Timey Wimey event to bring Eisenhorn characters into modern 40K.. Thoughts? #warhammer40k #EyeOfTerror #ReignOfIron #Eisenhorn

Improved the hot bottom half some more before finally attaching the pauldrons & cloak for good and then followed that up with the first stage of backlighting.

It's still a bit too lavender for now, I'll have to push some areas further toward pink next time.

Current WIP state of the Abaddon project based on the original Artwork by Karl Kopinski "Eye of Terror". His bottom half is painted in bright red, orange and yellow blends to present him as standing in fire and flames. He is also holding a sculpted planet in his power claw, painted to look like cadia but with cracks in the crust. his upper body is backlit with purple, blue and magenta light caused by the freehanded galaxy "eye of terror" on the backdrop behind him. A side-by-side of the two side-views showing how the freehanded galaxy on the backdrop affects the backside of Abaddon. The galaxy is stippled with white, purple, blue and magenta, freehanded onto the "eye of terror" backdrop. It almost shows in the same color setting on the upper half of the Abaddon miniature. His bottom half is painted in bright red, orange and yellow blends to present him as standing in fire and flames. Side-by-side "Before vs After" comparison of the left leg, that saw some significant changes with this update. the boot is particularly bright with yellows and even the "darkest" shadows are still bright orange, to symbolize how heated up the bottom area of the miniatures is. The further up on the model we look, the more dark oranges, reds and ultimately black it features in the paintjob.

I repainted the planet Cadia this weekend!

The previous version had genuinely turned into an ick when I looked it it, so filling the physical rifts and freehanding it was just necessary for me to be happy with this piece.

I'm so glad I did it.
