Okay this might be tax related but it's a big fucking deal because of something called FATCA. Under FATCA IRD will share information about US citizens resident in AoNZ with the IRS. This information is meant to be highly secure & given what we know about DOGE this is a worrying development.
Gavin Kliger, the Musk bro busting into the IRS… wait, is that the same Gavin Kliger who retweets Nick Fuentes and Andrew Tate?

Why yes, that is the same Gavin Kliger

Here’s a fun FATCA brain teaser for those of you so inclined
??? Apparently Venezuela oil revenues will go into “offshore accounts” outside of the US Treasury, PBS reports.

On the matter of US crypto regulation, I don't get why crypto isn't included in FBAR and FATCA declaration requirements (of foreign asset, i.e., assets outside the US banking system). If we think those regulations are effective at all (to combat tax evasion), crypto should 100% be included.

this isn't new or anything but the existence of FATCA is bewildering. "hey you have to give us all information about people in your country that we say are ours if we say they owe money, and also no we won't do the same for you, and also yes this costs you a lot of money to implement."

and they do!

I'm also reminded that American bankers can go decades without remembering that Britain even has a legal system.

British banks obey American FATCA every day because, "Fuck you. That's why."

FWIW, I have lots of room in Quebec, Canada, but with FATCA, banks do report to the US "authorities," even if they're just a bunch of...big-balled teens. Still, come for the kindness, stay because you'll freeze in place. Eh?

On my mind is, is FATCA next?

If you wanted to empower US and global tax fraud and corruption, gutting the IRS, FCPA, & the Corp Transparency Act is on point. Killing FATCA would be a massive step further in enabling domestic and foreign tax evasion and secrecy.
The US has never had a pro-corruption administration like this one: stopped enforcing Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), fired 17 Inspectors General, pardoned Blagojevic…

Now will stop enforcing most important anti-corruption legislation since FCPA that ended anonymous shell companies. YCMTSU

Hah. Hahahahaha. Wonder if FATCA reporting will stay in scope

(Don’t be daft Richard)
This is a favor to a couple of foreign crooks.

+ fatca, which is essentially overseas surveillance

FATCA Reporting requirements are truly egregious, imho. IRS requires foreign banks and some non-financial entities to report comprehensive information about US taxpayer assets to the IRS. We require it of foreign banks, but don’t reciprocate and require US banks to share same info with IRS.
Foreign account tax (FATCA) reporting
US financial institutions are not required to report information on assets held by foreign taxpayers to the IRS, despite foreign financial institutions doing so for US taxpayers under FATCA.

Seeing some points about getting foreign bank accounts and Americans are about to run headlong into FATCA - not only did Obama make it extraordinarily expensive to leave officially, even if you leave unofficially many banks won’t give you an account b/c of the reporting requirements for US persons
April 15, 2025 at 4:42 PM
So if you’re a US person abroad who wants to stay abroad you can’t get a bank account or move your own money b/c of FBAR & FATCA, if you’re a non US person in the US & you have to stay in the US & pay a series of ever higher bribes or the US will also take also make sure you’re left penniless abroad

Look up Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA)
February 19, 2025 at 7:57 PM
But for the uninitiated:

We have data on the account activity of all customers from an Isle of Man bank from around 2007 to 2019

What we also have are files that appear to be those prepared by the bank to send to the IOM Income Tax Division for FATCA, the CRS and the UK's IGA (like a UK FATCA)

<whispers> He's kind of right; just search on here for FATCA or MTD to see how painful a full-compliance environment can be to (generously) 99% of people affected.

Still the @ec.europa.eu quietly allows the sharing of #PNR passenger data and #FATCA data to continue (note: that was contrary to EU law even before Trump). The Commission refuses to do its job and protect Europeans.
