I'm fairly sure this violates the federal criteria for serving a sentence in a minimum security prison too. FCIs require that prisoners are within 10 yrs of completing their sentence and cannot have been convicted of a violent or sexual crime.

Most FCIs had workshops of some kind (think of the fictional Shawshank prison). Alcatraz's focus for decades was laundry -- its facilities did the bulk of the laundry for the USA 6th Army command, based in the Presidio... The furniture shop was in the prison's "Model Industries" building.
