It's the A Few Good Men trope, which a) only works to attract a certain type of person into certain kinds of units, insufficient for general purpose forces and b) the USMC made "unfuck the barracks" a core component of FD2030 for a reason
Some of the leadership do seem to have a theory that recruiting shortfalls are due to military service not sucking *enough* -- that a huge pool of young men would join except the US military isn't tough enough or strong enough or manly enough, so they just hang at their gym and dont join.
During WWII the US deployed a Naval ship whose sole purpose was to make, store, and provide ice cream to troops actively deployed to heavy combat areas. Now you can't even have 9 ball

much like the entire brigade of anti-FD2030 guys in the Marines, there's a lot of Old Guard FBI guys who had their brains broken by COVID or by the fact that the bureau is genuinely a modern environment now

I’ve long believed that Gen. McKenzie was behind the pressure campaign to nix FD2030 because he was so focused on Iran and CENTCOM he (like many in that AOR) could not fathom having to fight a real peer. So it’s not surprising that he’s now writing OpEds ignoring the Signal leak for strikes on Yemen

When by lean & lethal they mean heavily encumbered troops in unarmoured ISVs relying on unproven Anduril EW, unreliable Skydio drones, reduced or no Mech capabilities, & a UBL less than their PLA peers. It's even sadder when you realize the Army couldn't even adapt good ideas from the Corps FD2030.
