#FO1
I feel like there's a case to be made for fallout 1 over new vegas but realistically I never would have played FO1 if I didn't play new vegas first

Watching some of the FO1/2 choices again, a lot of them really are a 'good' option that 90% of people will pick, that has most of the content... and a contrarian option that is pretty objectively terrible.

Fallout 1 and Wasteland were both made by Interplay.

Bethesda owns Fallout now.

Remnants of Interplay became inXile Entertainment, and made Wasteland 2 and 3.

Now Xbox owns Bethesda and inXile.

We've come full circle. Just recreate Interplay and Black Isle Studios at this point. 😔

None of that is required reading. Like I have been playing CRPGs like Avernum, Geneforge, beat FO1, 2, and Tactics without guides.

Baldur's Gate, Soulbringer... you absolutely do not need guides for CRPGs

I don't care how pretentious this sounds, NV is a great game but it's great in the sense that it's a more accessible version of what Fallout 1 did far better, and the entire slate of first person CRPGs intentionally avoids being quite what FO1 was

FO1: Goons in power armor mug for the camera after shooting a helpless captive in occupied Canada.

FO4: Everything was 50s suburbia with robots and things were basically fine until the bombs fell.

Just a complete missed opportunity for any real glimpse into the past.

Nate is also canonically a war criminal, as he (according to one designer) is the guy killing a canadian execution style in the opener of FO1 or 2. Explain why Nora can hop in them then, or a common raider, or literally anyone except the brotherhood members.

Was just talking to my roommate about how interesting it is to be able to lock yourself out of half of the content of FO1 by setting your Int score too low (just mind the ableism)

I think it also benefits in a different direction too, which is that it has the basic foresight to reward players of FO1 and FO2 with an abundance of unforced or naturally flowing references to the stories of those games in a mostly logical way

The day 1 patch's been an expectation at least since 2002.

Game QA is hard. No matter how many hours a QA department puts in, that number's passed on the first day of release by the general audience.

Mind you, this speaks more to your point, not less. A FO1 disk by itself isn't terribly playable.

It was plausible in FO1 and FO76, but even by the time of FO2 we were seeing society getting back on its feet the NCR/Gun Runners actually make new things, introduce new societal values, and try to be more than just rewinding back to October 22, 2077.

Since we didn't have a lot of customization of sprites in Fo1, it was mostly left to text to do descriptive lifting. I think the artists did a fine interpretation of a post-apocalyptic survivor with their versions of Ian. It's not like there are a lot of opportunities to shave in the wasteland! :D

Like, tbh I like most things about Fallout 4, but the story is a piece of shit. I don't want to be random straight pre-war guy #562.
Ever since fo1, you could make your own character with their own background, but fo4 just puts you in a box.
That's why I use 100+ mods, lol 👍

Always one of the selling points of Fallout games. There’s multiple endings for every faction and sometimes every town, not just for the world.

Apparently in FO1, siding with the cop over the greedy casino owner was supposed to push the town towards authoritarianism, but that tested badly XD

> questgiver says come back after a few days to make sure the deathclaws don't respawn
> deathclaws respawn until you clear downstairs
> i didn't know there were stairs
> wonder why i never heard about that one quest where you kill 15 deathclaws in FO1

ask me about my accidental deathclaw farm

It's been a long time, but I could've sworn FO1 actually used the word too - they just didn't do anywhere near as much in terms of interacting with other political entities as in FO:NV because it's a much smaller game that was already ambitious as hell.

Blame Bethesda?
