I’m amazed to learn that it was only in *1972* that the wooden crosses in the German military cemetery (Deutscher soldatenfriedhof) at Connantre (Marne 51) in France were replaced by stone ones. #history 🗃️ #FWWHist #WW1 #FWW #1GM

Two war memoirs, written by two Danes sharing the same name. One, a Schleswig Dane called up to fight in the German Army - the other, a Danish volunteer in the Canadian Army who won a Victoria Cross.

#FWWhist #History #1GM #FWW #Grande-Guerre #WW1 NN Sedan Torcy, although mainly a French cemetery, includes the graves of several nationalities. Most are buried in the ossuary. The site includes CWGC graves too (and one memorial and 14 markers, to lost graves)

A day of research which featured a remarkable Franco-Australian family: a writer, a pioneer of "kite photography", two soldiers who served as interpreters to help liaison with allies, as well as a tragic military accident. #FWWHist #WW1 #1GM

The Helles Battlefield Study team carried out a commemoration on the last day of their recent trip to Gallipoli for a fallen player of Warrington Wolves Rugby League Club (known then as "The Wire"*) on behalf of the club and the Warrington Wolves Foundation.

Private Ernest Hind served with the 20th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, and was killed on 24 October 1917, aged 24. His records indicate that his parents lived in Preston and that he returned from New Bedford, USA, to enlist.

#Barleux #Somme (80): Sep 1917: Mounted British soldiers (any educated guess as to which unit/arm of service?) saluting the graves of some of the Frenchmen killed in one of the attacks on the village (probably in late summer or Autumn 1916). #Bordeaux’s Monument aux morts once again offers a stunning reminder of the scale of France’s First World War sacrifice.
However, its location away from the centre-ville gave it a (perhaps unwarranted) feeling of neglect or, at least, marginal importance to the modern city. #1GM #FWWHist #WW1 #FWW

These #FWW #maps are intriguing. They seem intended for educating allied troops to the progress of the Allied war effort and as a means to build and maintain #morale.
Does anyone know of any work that’s been done in looking into them? Journal articles?

Oct 18, 1918. My great-grandfather wrote:

“News in that we have Lille. – Navy landed at Ostend which with DOUAI makes a great days work.”

He also kept this General Staff map: the front on July 17 against Oct 5

After being recovered near St Julien in 2021, the remains of a British soldier have been identified through DNA analysis as Lance-Corporal Claude Stanley Dell of the Yorkshire Regiment.

Today he was laid to rest at Poelcapelle British Cemetery in the presence of his relatives.

I'm almost finished with the brilliant memoir "Over the Top" by Arthur Lambert. This is an amusing vignette he relates about a prisoner in the Italian campaign that occurred in the autumn of 1918. It speaks for itself. Enjoy!
