I feel like I’m increasingly showing how out-of-touch I am by assuming FY1s are on BlueSky instead of Tikstasnap or whatever but here are some thoughts I have about FY1s on AMU

To which my main advice to FY1s (not that I'm sure many of them are on here) is just to see the damn patient and try to eyeball as many as you can in the day to day job.
Just really builds that knowledge of the difference between a well, sick but stable and oh god I need help patient.

I see it so often that I now say to the new FY1s that it is normal and human and something they shouldn’t expect to lose. Also that there will be some situations too close to home and to hand over unless it is an immediate emergency- and to take that on for someone because it will be them one day

I find it so depressing having loads of really good FY1s asking for taster weeks knowing that there are no numbers for them to apply for.
There is no funding to increase consultant posts, so they say no point training more
There is a lot more work we could be doing if we had staff

Our “new” FY1s at the Royal Derby Hospital aren’t that “new” anymore and have settled in just great…grateful for all their input during their first NHS bank holiday weekend as doctors…It was a lot busier than my first one 38 years ago!

May be a very anecdotal take but has this summer felt a lot better then the last few for those working in NHS hospitals?
Mainly saying this as the take list has felt a lot more under control and had a lot more time to induct the new FY1s.
Every other year its felt on the brink of winter business.

Yeah, I think the DME was quite surprised that I was saying it to all the FY1s (I get a palliative session in induction) when she turned up at the end of my session one time. But if I don’t nobody does, and somehow we need to change culture. I explain how it works in our team as an example
