1-2 I'm currently reading The Facemaker and I came across a passage that has some parallels as to why people are opposed to vaccine today. They haven't seen the diseases they prevent.

During #WWI, medics applied 1.5 million splints, fitted over 20,000 artificial eyes & used 7,250 tons of cotton wool while applying 108 million bandages to injured soldiers. More than 6,000 medics died & over 17,000 were wounded in the British Army alone.

Research is about discovery. THE FACEMAKER opens with the story of Private Percy Clare, who's shot in the face in WWI. I found his handwritten diary at the Imperial War Museum, which led me to connecting with relatives of his who were able to provide further documents & details about his life.
Not a historian but like to research. The AI might summarize what I'm looking for, but it doesn't find what I'm *not* looking for. The book on the shelf next to the one I wanted. The insight in chapter 6 based on the quote I needed from chapter 4.

It's true! The Butchering Art was narrated by Ralph Lister - a distant relative of Joseph Lister, whom the book is about. And The Facemaker was narrated by the actor Daniel Gillies, who happens to be the great nephew of Sir Harold Gillies!
I was also delighted to learn that both audiobooks are narrated by distant relations of the books’ central characters, too cool!

I discuss Michael Dillon's story in my book THE FACEMAKER as it was Sir Harold Gillies who successfully performed the phalloplasty on him. Dillon was later outed by the press and driven from Britain. Gillies stood behind him. He felt strongly that people should be in control of their identities.
