For a few weeks, the leak generated some headlines. Time magazine reported breathlessly on the “sexual assault crisis on American campuses.”

Then the clicks died down, the media went back to reporting about millennials eating too much avocado toast, and everything continued pretty much unchanged.

Food Network-Featured NOLA On 5th Permanently Closes In San Diego's Hillcrest
San Diego's Hillcrest has lost its taste of the Big Easy. NOLA on 5th, the New Orleans-inspired restaurant and bar that spent more than five years serving jambalaya, gumbo, po' boys, crawfish boils and Hurricanes from a historic Fifth Avenue house, has permanently closed. A sign posted at the restaurant now states that the business is permanently shuttered, sparking questions from customers who showed up expecting to find it open. The closure is notable because NOLA on 5th had developed a fairly high profile during its relatively short run. The restaurant was featured on Guy Fieri's Food Network series _Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives_ in an episode titled "West Coast Wonders," where Fieri sampled its jambalaya and Black & Gold Po' Boy. Food Network still hosts NOLA on 5th's jambalaya recipe and identifies it as a featured restaurant from the show. NOLA on 5th opened in 2021 at 3683 Fifth Avenue, taking over a roughly 3,200-square-foot, 1902-era Craftsman house that had previously housed the short-lived World Famous Tin Room. SanDiegoVille first reported on the project in March 2021, when owners Ron Crilley and Andrew Boyer were preparing to reinvent their former Bankers Hill restaurant, 5th Ave Kitchen & Tap, with an entirely new New Orleans-inspired identity. Crilley has long been associated with Cardiff's Kraken Bar & Restaurant, while Boyer previously worked as general manager of Carver's Steaks & Chops in Rancho Bernardo. At NOLA on 5th, Boyer, who the restaurant described as a longtime New Orleans resident, developed a menu centered around Louisiana comfort food, including jambalaya, gumbo, red beans and rice, shrimp and catfish po' boys, Cajun pasta and seasonal crawfish boils. The restaurant went fairly far in trying to recreate a New Orleans experience in San Diego. Its own website said it imported Leidenheimer French bread from Louisiana and served traditional cocktails such as Hurricanes, Sazeracs and Vieux Carrés. It also became a local gathering place for LSU alumni and New Orleans Saints fans, particularly during football season. NOLA on 5th's unusual two-story setting was also part of its identity. The downstairs offered a casual bar and outdoor patio, while the upstairs was positioned as a somewhat more upscale dining room overlooking Fifth Avenue. The restaurant described itself as family-owned and focused on bringing "the flavors and spirit of New Orleans dining" to Hillcrest. Exactly what ultimately caused the closure has not been publicly confirmed. A recent Reddit discussion began after a customer arrived at the restaurant and found a notice on the door stating that NOLA on 5th was permanently closed. One commenter claimed the restaurant was not making enough money, while another said the owner had told them the business had struggled financially and that a closure had been contemplated for some time. Those claims have not been independently verified, and SanDiegoVille is not treating them as an official explanation from ownership. The timing is somewhat abrupt. As recently as September 5, OpenTable was still allowing reservations for NOLA on 5th, and the restaurant's own website remains online with posted hours, menus and even upcoming promotional events later this month. Several third-party restaurant listings also continue to show the business as operational, suggesting the closure has not yet fully propagated across reservation and dining platforms. The restaurant's recent online reviews also suggest it was still actively serving customers deep into the summer. Roadtrippers displays Yelp reviews from July and August 2026 describing recent visits, while OpenTable showed more than 100 reviews and continued taking reservations just days before the closure notice appeared. NOLA on 5th had also become one of a relatively small number of San Diego restaurants to receive the _Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives_ treatment. Its television appearance helped introduce a broader audience to dishes including its chicken-and-andouille jambalaya and Black & Gold Po' Boy, named for the colors of the New Orleans Saints. Reaction to the closure has been mixed. Some Reddit commenters said they had enjoyed the restaurant and had hoped to return, while others criticized recent meals and service. One former server said they liked working there but ultimately left because they were not earning enough money, another anecdotal indication that business may have been challenging, though not proof of why the restaurant closed. The shutdown adds another vacancy to Hillcrest's constantly evolving restaurant landscape and ends a five-year run for a concept that arrived during one of the most turbulent periods the hospitality industry had seen. NOLA on 5th opened as San Diego was emerging from pandemic-era restaurant restrictions and went on to survive long enough to land national television exposure, become a destination for Louisiana expats and football fans, and establish itself as one of the city's more visible Cajun and Creole restaurants. For now, there has been no public announcement identifying a successor for the historic building at 3683 Fifth Avenue. **_Originally published on September 8, 2026._**

Geometry Reveals the Tricks behind Gerrymandering
Hardly anyone reckoned that struggling in high school to calculate the area of a triangle or the volume of a prism could be used one day to influence the outcome of an election. Geometry, however, can be a powerful tool in shaping results of an electoral contest—at least in plurality voting systems. Designing a perfect election system for multiple parties is impossible, even with mathematical tools. But if, by and large, there are only two dominant parties, as in the U.S., things should be fairly clear-cut. The party candidate with the most votes wins, right? Anyone who has followed U.S. presidential elections in recent years knows that the reality is different. One important factor is the actual shape of the voting districts. If cleverly designed, a party that is actually losing can still gain the majority of representatives—an issue that was by no means absent in the U.S. midterm elections. Math playsan important role in determining election outcomes, particularly for the 435 seats in the House of Representatives. By cleverly choosing the boundaries of a congressional district, a party can enable its candidate to win even if the vote count does not fairly represent the sentiment of the voters. On...

Gamer News - The Last Night Director Breaks Silence, Gives Small Update on Long-Awaited Pixel-Art Cyberpunk Game: Tim Soret, the director of the cyberpunk-styled 2D side-scrolling action-platformer The Last Night, has broken his silence… #TheLastNight #CyberpunkGame #PixelArt #GamingNews #E32017
The Last Night Director Breaks Silence, Gives Small Update on Long-Awaited Pixel-Art Cyberpunk Game
Tim Soret, the director of the cyberpunk-styled 2D side-scrolling action-platformer The Last Night, has broken his silence about the long-gestating project, which was first revealed at E3 2017 (remember E3?). Soret says he believes its story will resonate more when it actually comes out than it did when it was announced nine years ago because of the "evolution of technology and social dynamics eerily matching the trajectory we envisioned." Soret took to X to discuss the project, albeit in fairly vague terms. But anything is a welcome update at this point! "Next month, if everything goes according go plan, I should be out of a decade of sacrifice," he said, seemingly referring to the deliberate way he's built his team and game. "It’s about time. I’m just getting started. I have so much to offer to the world." He continued: "Developing a sovereign self-publishing studio with its own IPs, technology, visual design, world design, game design, and narrative design philosophies, in direct contact with the audience and no middlemen, instead of rushing into production. [I'm] thankful to my angels and investors, who helped us resist drinking from the poisoned well in the desert while finding our path to independence. There is a cemetery of indie studios that, lured by mirages of safety, accepted to be acquired only to be killed in the first storm." Staying independent has clearly been a decision he does not regret, despite the added financial pressures he alludes to. He concluded by saying, "When The Last Night will come out, it won't be as visionary as when it was originally conceived," perhaps referring to other somewhat similar games that have come out in the meantime, such as Replaced. "But we traded prescience for relevance. Thanks to the evolution of technology and social dynamics eerily matching the trajectory we envisioned, the setting and the story will resonate." After its fantastic reveal, Soret took IGN behind the scenes of its announcement trailer. Here's hoping we get a more concrete update on its development status soon.
