abandoned trenches trowels scattered where they had been dropped the glint of potsherds forming asterisms in the full moon’s glare a gust of wind rain-laden grabs a battered door and slams it and again against the prefab. office wall and in the mud that fills the site a viscous sucking fathomless expanse brown shining bubbles rise and as they burst they blurt out hollow moans despairing cries the hopeless pleas for mercy from a score of long-departed unpaid volunteers

Beyond the armoured glass, its metal shutters now drawn back, I stare at vacuum. The stars are brighter than I’ve ever seen — but I don’t see them, nor the pale reflection of my empty face. And when the blue and white of Earth comes round again, I’ll only see that you’re no longer there. * The Earth from orbit, sunlit white on blue — I see only your absence * I gaze at vacuum; weightless, unshed tears transform the Earth — shattered stars. * Through armoured glass shines opal Earth; all I see is my reflected loss. * From here the ocean looks too small to swallow up one person’s sadness.

Bored, we pass by fields of grain that stretch towards a wide monotonous horizon (and presumably beyond it), farm land split by endless lines of unpaved road. We stop and look a little closer, see that what seemed wheat has heads of clustered reptile eggs, their dusty coatings glowing slightly green. The wings that slice the sky are not a Cooper Hawk’s; the things that soar above us are not feathered, soft, warm blooded — leathery their skin, their wing-tips clawed. I won’t pretend, prevaricate, ignore; I don’t think we’re in Kansas any more.
