The Eye is sad to record the loss of Barry Fantoni, who died on 20 May 2025 aged 85 in Turin.

An appreciation of his extensive contribution to Private Eye, with examples of his illustrations and cartoons, and memories from his friends and colleagues appears in the current issue.

The great satirist, artist, cartoonist, jazz musician and renaissance man Barry Fantoni died last week.

A man of so many talents who spent a lifetime bursting with enthusiasm and ideas and ambitions. Here's one of my favourite cartoons of his.

So farewell then Barry.

With this Blood Angel Marine, I wanted to pay tribute to the Italian journalist Lorenzo Fantoni for his work in popularising the lore of Warhammer 40k.

It is largely thanks to him that I’ve been devouring hours and hours of content of late!

So farewell then, Barry Fantoni... I think we know who EJ Thribb will be commemorating in the next Eye. Baz was a good friend, and in my London days a regular presence in my life, as I drummed in his band at the Chelsea Arts Club and elsewhere. I was acutely aware of his legend and influence.

Did you know typewriters were invented b/c of a blind woman? Pellegrino Turri invented it for Countess Carolina Fantoni, a blind woman, so she could regain her ability to write to friends. Just an example of how accessibility often serves EVERYONE.
