#Fathomfolk,
As the first in the Drowned World duology I loved this book for the conversations it has surrounding not just Asian diaspora but the wealth gap in general. Truly an excellent series and highly recommend it!

Fathomfolk, Drowned World book 1 by Eliza Chan
Please note this review was originally written several years ago and has not been edited. Tiankawi is an island, an experiment really and a beacon of hope for many that the Fathomfolk and humans can coexist peacefully, that can help each of not just survive but maybe even thrive in a world where most land has been covered in water. Unfortunately for the Fathomfolk in Tiankawi the great experiment has become a pipe dream.

Okay Bluesky, which of these books should I read next?

Tideborn is a sequel to Fathomfolk; SEAsia-inspired maritime fantasy.

Dunvegan Castle: 3rd installment of Edinburgh nights. Gothic dystopian Scotland with magic and Zimbabwean-inspired folklore.

Good morning Womble! I just started reading Eliza Chan's Fathomfolk after finishing T Kingfisher's excellent Nettle and Bone.

Game On was also really good - another queer hockey romance with a unique spin that landed real well.

Fathomfolk was alright. The world was interesting and the characters were good, it just didn't hit quite as well as I'd hoped. But worth looking at how book 2 hits to see about picking it up.

You know I’m going to recommend you Fathomfolk, and Tideborn, both by Eliza Chan. And her new one: Harbour of Hungry Ghosts.

Black Water Sister by Zen Cho.

A Song of Legends Lost by MH Ayinde - not read it yet but heard it’s very good.

Tyger by SF Said. Gorgeous artwork with the story.

Fathomfolk is very cool!

Aww I loved Fathomfolk. The setting felt like home when I first read it. And sure enough Singapore was one of the inspirations for the city of Tiankawi.

Another I’ve since enjoyed a lot is Zen Cho’s “Black Water Sister”, set in Penang, Malaysia. I need more of her books too.

Hope you enjoy them!

Met Eliza Chan last week for the launch of her new book “Harbour of Hungry Ghosts.”

I loved her “Fathomfolk” book and I cannot wait to start Tideborn (the sequel) and then get on to this.

Really enjoyed talking about the Hungry Ghost festival with you too, @elizachanwrites.bsky.social

I’ve read her Fathomfolk book and really liked it.

I also browsed the first chapter of HoHG and I can’t wait to finish my current book so I can start that and the sequel to Fathomfolk.

For TBRs, I'm finally getting to The Lost Girl by Sangu Mandanna which is really keeping me guessing as to how it's going to end, and I'm making my way through both Fathomfolk by Eliza Chan and This Knight Topples Empires by Ry Herman, all of which have very intriguing worlds and characters.

when I say rafayel has been a healing character for me, I mean I actually swam in the ocean for the first time in 20 years (girl with severe thalassophobia mentally chanting “he’d be so proud of you rn” whenever i let myself float)

also book good so far :)
