Beautiful folds in the PreCambrian Hakatai Shale Formation in the Grand Canyon Supergroup.

Not far from Tokyo, we have a convenient island for a round-day geological trip - Jogashima. We can see the uplifted deposits of a not-so-ancient submarine volcano. #FaultFriday

Happy Valentine’s Day to all my Bluesky friends! Today I bring you a heart right at the boundary of the Great Unconformity in the Grand Canyon. #FaultFriday

Here is a #landscape photo with amazing #geology. Across this lake is a large chevron fold with several normal faults. These meta-sedimentary rocks were compressed by intruding granites during the Mesozoic era.

I just can’t wait to get on this road again. Cottonwood Road in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. A great example of faulting with off set beds in the Entrada Sandstone.

I’m obsessed with this slab of gypsum!! Look at all the squiggly folds and faulting showing the deformation of the evaporite!! #FridayFold #FaultFriday ⚒️🧪

I studied #geology to understand how mountains formed. It still gets me arm-waving. Check out the dramatic Mitten Park Fault in Dinosaur Nat’l Mon. This thrust fault pushed older rock units over younger ones & happened during the Uinta Mtns uplift.

Here is an amazing fault in the #GrandCanyon for #FaultFriday. The fault is along the creek with different units on both sides. On the right are slivers of the red Hakatai Fm & the brown Shinumo Quartzite. On the left are Shinumo Quartzite beds & a diabase sill.

1/2 here is a photo of upturned beds of the Redwall Formation & the Supai Group along the Butte Fault, Grand Canyon. The displacement is ~3,000 feet of offset! It is seen on the north side of the Colorado River between the Nankoweap Trail and Tanner Beach.

Here is a beautiful kink fold in Tapeats Sandstone in the Grand Canyon. It is a sharp angular hinge fold that looks like with a little more compression it could have been a thrust fault.

It’s #FoldFriday and #FaultFriday! For those that are curious, here is a fault in the Tapeats Sandstone near Cremation Canyon in the #GrandCanyon. You can also see where the beds folded during movement along the fault.

Trying to bring back good old geology #FoldFriday/#FaultFriday in this feed, although it gathers only the last 7 days at maximum. ⚒️🧪 It always provided some of the most amazing geologic images.

Is #FaultFriday a thing? If not, we should make it a thing.

2/2 Here is a 2nd photo of the Butte Fault (upturned beds in the middle). The fault created a zone for traveling which was first used by Native people and then by horse rustlers, miners and cowboys. Hence it is also called the “Horsethief Route”. We hiked this route in 2015.

These wooden models were made by cabinetmaker Thomas Sopwith to show faulting in mining areas. They were useful for miners to predict structural geology and also used as teaching aids in higher education.

See these at our behind-the-scenes tours, the next one is on Mon 11 May!

Arkle is a #mountain in the Highlands made of Lower #Cambrian quartzite overlying a much older complex of Lewisian #gneiss. Between these #rock layers there is an uncomformity, which is a buried erosional surface that shows #sediment deposition was non-continuous!

A few months ago I made a Feed that gathers #FoldFriday and #FaultFriday posts, but it's most of the time empty, because it can only save posts of the last 7 days. Now that many geoscientists came over here I would be really happy to see these weekly contributions again!

The feed gathers FridayFold, FoldFriday, FridayFault, FaultFriday. Most use FridayFold. Nonetheless, the feed can only save the posts of the last 7 days, so most of the time you only see the ones from last Friday.
