#FeedGen
back in my day you could just write that shit yourself

Looks like feeds are an AppView feature and alt AppViews like @eurosky.social have to impl their own copy/version of the feedgen patterns, potentially adapting to their own lexicons

But looks like the bsky format is defacto for now, it’s even in eurosky repo github.com/eurosky-soci...

when i click on the Mutuals feed when already at the top, it replaced the page with much older posts. It still feels surprising that this wasn't an issue with my client but instead the feedgen (and it's still happening days later)

Stratos feedgen has been rewritten in rust, some local tests confirmed it's about 6x faster even accounting for the in-memory cache warmup of the typescript one. A bit bonkers how performant it is with a smaller footprint.

I've been rewriting the stratos feedgen in rust and am now using it to do a fully self contained run of multiple pds with space pds and prior feedgen alongside the new one to run integration tests and perf comparison.

I'd say: don't be afraid of stealing the bluesky feedgen concept, it's a damn good one: let users create their own feeds & share them. A feed is just a collection with some algorithm for insertion, refresh, pagination, etc.

pds/feedgen split makes sense to me. the annoying bit is the client still needs some kind of global index to hydrate the feed and make discovery not feel broken, so the dependency just moves around a bit.

How about this:
- Your PDS owns your data. Those are YOUR data.
- Your FeedGen owns your feed. It controls how your feed is constructed but doesn't own data other than just links. This doesn't need full relay.
- A client you use will work on top of that and needs global index to hydrate your feed.

graze for a feedgen) because re-inventing the wheel is sometimes very cool, but it's still easier to just go to the wheel shop and get one there :D

Yup, like the Bluesky AppView, if the feedgen returns some at:// URIs that just don't exist and are made up, it will silently filter these out

except it means giving a single person all of my metadata…

bluesky feedgen meta where everyone makes their version of the same feed to not leak metadata

anyway i decided to talk to the app view directly and that's a 502 InvalidFeedResponse, and that's likely because the feedgen returns a 200 OK with no body

and some generic 401s

yknow, the thing what sparked my interest in creating a real did:web account was @telescopefeeds.bsky.social. When i was working on this feed builder, i had to make a did:web for the feedgen endpoint itself. not sure why it needs a did:web though, its not a real bsky account with a pds host

Someone finally did it, good work. Not very useful for those of us on Bluesky's mushroom PDSs, but this goes a long way to re-creating that fediverse local timeline experience for users on niche PDSs.

How about a feedgen of posts by users who share your domain, like those on @aviary.domains?

if you make a feedgen you can give a reason on posts (i.e. include reposts that show just like in the following feed) fwiw
