"Surgery?" Judah asked. "Yes, to get the tumor removed," the woman answered. "I mean, I could wait until your body disperses it by itself, but seeing as we have to get the computer chip out too—" "Chip?!" Judah echoed, voice pitching higher with panic and suspicion. "What chip?" Judah's hand flew to the back of his neck. A dull, cold memory stirred—pain, sharp and sudden, like a needle drilling into his skull. Now, as his fingers pressed against the skin there, his mind spiraled. "Get it out," he whispered, then louder, more frantic. "Get it out! Get it out!"

Through the oppressive silence of oncoming unconsciousness, he heard a voice—cold, clinical, utterly detached. Just one scientist reporting to the other. "Etot ispytuyemyy derzhitsya dol'she chem predydushchiye. Ono rasprostranaetsya po vsemu telu. Pokhozhe, essenzii boryutsya za dominirovanie." It wasn't English, and even if it had been, Judah wouldn't have understood a single word, not with the way his brain was slowly shutting down. He was dying.

"Leave him be, you menace," Nina growled. "Oh, come on," Adrian chuckled. "Judah here is perfectly capable of fighting his own battles, isn't he?" Judah briefly glared at him, but Adrian's grin only grew. The teasing glint was a challenging one now. And Judah decided then and there that he would rise to it. "I can," he confirmed, looking at Nina. "There's no need to baby me. I've been on my own since I was 16." A brief flash of different emotions flitted across Nina's face. Pity—which Judah abhorred—worry—which wasn't so bad—regret—which was unexpected—acceptance—which was what he'd been looking for—and lastly, amusement. "You're right," she said, a smirk playing around her lips. "You're a grown man; you can handle him just fine."

"Chase," Duvac grabbed one of his shoulders, catching his wrist with the other hand, squeezing tight enough to cause a twinge of pain that snapped him out. "If you flip your lid now, you're going to be of no use during this operation. Do you want that?" His friend's voice was harsh—unyielding like Duvac always was. A fucking hard ass for anyone who needed it. Most of his soldiers never even saw him smile, but they respected him either way. His training methods were harsh but fair, and they'd kept many of them alive during these trying times. Chase clung to that harsh tone now, anchoring himself with a few deep breaths. Slowly, he felt his fangs retract, and his claws slide back underneath his skin as his vision returned to the human side of him—less tinged with the red of wrath and clearer now. "I'm coming with," he said, a growl still in his voice. "I've nothing against that," Duvac answered. "Just answer me this one question. Who can do the same tech-whiz shit you can do when you're out in the field?" "Juniper." The answer came in an instant. Chase had trained her for over a year now; the only reason she wasn't stepping in more often was that he didn't want to relinquish his domain until they found Adrian. But he had been found now. And there was nothing—no one—stopping Chase from marching in there and getting his nephew back, even if it meant a bloodbath, even if he had to slaughter hundreds to do it.

"Chase?" Duvac asked, his voice cautious as he turned back around. His friend was gripping the desk hard enough that the wood splintered beneath his fingertips, his face a mask of fury. The usually blue eyes were now a glowing orange as the shapechanger's wilder side started to take over—fangs elongating, claws emerging from the tips of his fingers. He was staring straight ahead, as though the world had narrowed down to nothing but the picture that had just popped up on his screen, and one glance at the monitor told Duvac everything he needed to know. They'd finally found him. Adrian was in that lab.

He could see neither the glow of the exit sign nor the flicker of medical equipment, and when he swiveled the flashlight over Judah's bed, it seemed as though the light was getting swallowed by the shadows around him. Sure, as a Canidae, he had night vision, but even that didn't seem able to penetrate the unnatural darkness around his roommate, so he relied on his other senses to try to figure out what was wrong with Judah. At first, he listened, trying to hear if there was any danger. Judah's breath was shallow and ragged, as though he was having some kind of panic attack. His nose only confirmed Adrian's guess. The air in their room was thick with the acrid scent of fear mixed with the smell of… rot and something metallic? Well, that wasn't good. Before doing anything else, Adrian pressed the call button for a nurse or doctor, hoping they'd get here fast, despite the late hour.

Judah didn't have a wolf side, but every living being needed the freedom to breathe something other than stale air blowing in through air shafts, smelling of cold sweat, blood, and disinfectant. His new friend was no exception. And to see him now, stepping out onto the balcony, reaching for the freezing railing and clinging to it until his fingers turned blue, Adrian wondered how long it'd been. "Loosen up a little, Judah, or you'll fuse your fingers with the railing," Nina cautioned him, but he didn't even seem to hear her, instead lifting his face into the night sky and greedily sucking in the cold air. "He's gonna get frostbite," Nina huffed, leaning on the wall next to the balcony doors. "It'll heal," Adrian answered nonchalantly. "He needs this more than you babying him right now."

The three fluids merged in the transparent junction—swirling together like ink in water. The color darkened rapidly, shifting into a deep, unnatural black that glistened with an oily sheen. He could see it inching down the tube, slow and inevitable, until it hit his vein. His breathing quickened, and he expected to feel something, but nothing happened—at least not at first.

"W-we zapped him out," the woman answered. "With the computer chip in his brainstem, right?" Duvac asked, a feral growl rumbling in his chest. "Des monstres, autant que vous êtes," he cursed. "What else does it do besides tracking him like a rabid dog?" This time, the woman fell silent, staring up at him, wide-eyed and afraid. Duvac took a deliberate step forward, his boot landing in the pool of blood that had gathered underneath the man he'd drained dry with a wet splash. "Now, now, don't be coy; you must know what else it does," Duvac growled. "I-If I tell you, you will kill me!" she gasped in terror. "I will kill you either way," Duvac nonchalantly answered. "The how, however, depends entirely on your cooperation."

"You barely know me," Judah remarked, but inside him something stirred. It had been so long since he'd had someone to rely on, long enough to make him distrust the offer. In his experience, people didn't look out for someone like him unless they thought they could get something from him in return. So what did Adrian want? What was going to be the price he'd have to pay for this friendship? "We were both in that blasted lab," Adrian said now. "That already counts as something in my book. But if you truly don't want my help, then I'll back off." He shrugged again. "Think about it. I'm going back to sleep."

Adrian's instincts woke him in the middle of the night. He blinked his eye open, unsure what had triggered the fine hairs at the back of his neck to rise as they did now. It was dark in the room, too dark. He reached for his phone and checked the time—3 am—before he turned on the flashlight to orient himself. He could see neither the glow of the exit sign nor the flicker of medical equipment, and when he swiveled the flashlight over Judah's bed, it seemed as though the light was getting swallowed by the shadows around him. Then, he swung his legs off the bed and started to slowly pad over to Judah's bed. The shadows here were… different. Like something was hovering above Judah's body. It clung to Adrian like a living, breathing being, making him feel as though he was marching through water.

"I'm rather… new at this," Judah answered with a shrug. "I was… mortal before I went into that lab." "You were?" Adrian frowned. He had heard that the Untouched had begun trying to turn some of their own in an attempt to create loyal soldiers in their fight against the perceived threat of Adrian's people. "Yeah," Judah nodded. "Hm," Adrian tilted his head with a soft hum. "You're lucky you made it out with your sanity intact then," he said. "There's a reason why there aren't a lot of Made within our ranks." "There aren't?" Judah asked. He really seemed to have no idea. Adrian snarled inwardly. How cruel were these people, that they forced even their own through such a fundamental change without fully disclosing what that would mean? "Yeah," he finally confirmed. "I know of two turned vampires who made it through their first five decades, and only one who made it past a century. Most can't handle the constant pressure of telepathy that comes with the change, and they have to maintain the mental fortitude to keep everyone's thoughts out. They go insane after a while, get bloodthirsty, and kill without rhyme or reason." Judah's eyes widened in terror, and Adrian flinched. Oh, he could've kicked himself then and there. Why did he have to tell the guy all that when he'd just been turned Immortal and made it through the first hurdle of all of this? It'd only scare him for his future. "They… they never told me any of that," Judah whispered. "I'm sorry," Adrian answered. "They either didn't know, or wanted you compliant."

"Out—out—out!" he screamed, and the shadows answered his panic. They slithered from every corner of the room, drawn to him not by will but by sheer instinct. They slicked across the floor like snakes, curled up the bedframe, and embraced his frail form, giving him the claws he so desperately needed. Margaret jumped up from the chair and pushed a button on the intercom by the wall, calling for help to stop him from hurting himself any further.
