Raised protected is a great option for residential streets w driveways, & that's what Alameda has recommended for the long-term plan on Fernside. Funding it is another question entirely though.
But when new residential developments are built, raised protected should absolutely be the standard.

Alameda’s bike network success story is seriously under-reported. They had the East Bay’s 1st protected bikeway back in 2008 on Fernside & the 2nd in 2015 on Shoreline. They (10.5 mi, pop 79k) are now tied w Fremont (78 mi, pop 232k) for the most protected bikeways at 18 each, w more in the works.
Stargell getting roundabouts and Cross Alameda Trail level upgrades, 5th Street getting protected bike lanes and road diet, Third St-Mosley Ave getting neighborhood Greenway treatments (traffic circles, speed humps, bulb outs, etc.)
Seaplane Lagoon ferry float becoming battery bank & SUPER charger.

Oakland & Alameda are both being recommended for AHSC affordable housing awards this cycle, w protected bikeway funding included.

A few months back I brought a friend on a history and heritage walking tour of Drumcondra. One of our stops was a house called Fernside on the Upper Drumcondra Road where the British Army tracked Dan Breen and Seán Treacy to their hideout in October, 1920. (1/n)

Fernside is also so great, used to love the to go cocktails during the Covid era when I lived over there. Shawarma Guys got best restaurant in the country award I think? which is nuts, imagine it’s exploded in popularity since.
