It’s almost time to start watching some #FestiveFilms! I’ve got my favourites but I’m always on the lookout for some new #ChristmasMovies to add to my list. Have you got any recommendations? Maybe a cult classic or forgotten gem? Any genre as long as it’s Christmassy!

‪Nutcracker: The Motion Picture (1986): The ballet is magical, aided here by the art design of Maurice Sendak. The sets, costumes and character designs were all so much fun. I think I even saw a Wild Thing hiding in a backdrop. I really enjoyed it. ‬

‪Blackadder’s A Christmas Carol (1988): My first time watching any Blackadder and I really enjoyed it. It’s a fun twist on the premise of Dickens’ story with humour that is somehow both highbrow and lowbrow. Rowan Atkinson is brilliant.‬

Thanks to those who followed my #FestiveFilms thread! Santa has gifted me this amazing book & there are films mentioned here that I’ve never seen, and definitely want to put on next years list!

‪A Christmas Story (1983): The scene at the end of the movie, where Ralphie’s parents watch the snow fall in the light of their Christmas tree, is one of the most perfect scenes ever put to film. I don’t watch it every year, but almost. A classic. ‬

‪Scrooge (1935): Some interesting choices to add, omit, or expand on things that are barely a mention in the novella. Seymour Hicks’ Scrooge is particularly miserable, so when he finds the Christmas spirit it’s a very dramatic change. It’s pretty good. ‬

‪A Christmas Carol (1951): Good to start off the holiday season with this one, it helps to shake off the Humbug and get in the Christmas spirit. It won’t be the last adaptation of Dicken’s story I watch this year, but it’s my all-time favourite!‬

‪All The Creatures Were Stirring (2018): A holiday horror anthology with 5 stories and a framing device, which is a lot for the 80 minute runtime. There were some fun ideas but they may have been a bit ambitious for the movie’s budget.‬

Here’s the list of all of the #FestiveFilms I watched this year, I even got in a couple of New Year’s Eve movies as well. Watched a bunch that were new to me, but I don’t know that I found any that will get into the annual rotation. Did you find any new favourites this year?

Somehow, I've never seen this. So I guess this is my next Christmas movie! #ChristmasMovies #HolidayMovies #FestiveFilms #XmasMovies #ChristmasCinema #HolidayClassics #ChristmasMovieNight

‪Y2K (2024): A Kids on Bikes style adventure but with way more sex, drugs, alcohol, bad language, and gore than you would generally find in a Spielberg movie. Captures the “computers are magic” logic that a lot of movies had in the 90s. Silly but fun. ‬

‪The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (2024): The film has a surreal feel which helps make the Herdman’s scandalous activities fit in the world. The performances from the young actors may be a bit uneven, but it all kinda works. Very sweet. ‬

‪Prancer (1989): I really enjoyed this. The lead gives a very natural performance, her sadness felt genuine, and her too few moments of joy were surprisingly affecting. Sam Elliott was very scary, I thought there was a good chance he’d shoot that deer.‬

‪The Thin Man (1934): Murder, fraud, infidelity, and Christmas! The mystery at its centre was engaging, but the movie’s draw is Nick and Nora, their snappy dialogue, their heroic consumption of booze, and their very good dog Asta. I liked it a lot.‬

‪An American Christmas Carol (1979): it was a bold choice to cast the Fonz as the old miser, but the make-up isn’t bad, and he plays young and old well. It’s a little slow, and the tv budget shows, but it’s a decent interpretation. ‬

‪It’s A Wonderful Knife (2023): A fun take on the slasher genre, in the vein of Totally Killer or Happy Death Day, with lots of Christmas atmosphere and nods to classic holiday films. Don’t think too much about it and you’ll have a good time. ‬

So here is the full list, total score 158/260, average is 6/10. A couple of surprise successes that raised my Christmas spirit, a load of that I could probably recite myself, and some true stinkers. The movie highlight was getting to see the Muppet Christmas Carol on a big screen. #festivefilms

‪Terror Train (1980): A New Year’s Eve masquerade party with Jamie Lee Curtis, some college coeds, a blood thirsty killer, and a magical performance by David Copperfield. There are several great movies about murders on trains, this is not one of them. ‬

‪Silent Night (2021): Didn’t know much about this going in, so the tone caught me off guard. It’s mostly a drama with a bit of farcical comedy thrown in (I think it could have used more of that). Bit of a downer, but it’s well made with a great cast.‬

‪Charles Dickens’ a Christmas Carol (2012): I commend its adherence to the text, and its attempts at creative visuals, but it strips away all the joy from the story. It feels very small, like a play all shot in one location. Not great.‬

‪#FestiveFilms #CharlesDickensAChristmasCarol‬

‪Christmas Bloody Christmas (2022): The classic Christmas tale of a military grade animatronic Santa running amok in a small town. Didn’t love that everyone yells their lines at the same time. I did love the practical explosions and gore. ‬
