Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. argent light spilling through unfurled curtains, that trembling, flap at the nearing squall, a pole held in hand lifts aloft a quilted sail, childish breaths hitching and troughing, under the bed quiver barechested man dolls, scraggled grizzled bears, and of course a princess, though not pampered, this one. “Stay below deck” she whispers, holding a flashlight retrieved from cook’s galley, she peers out from forecastle into the torrential gloom, the moon having been sent for his bath by cloudy outstretched arm, a stern gust slams the window shut and she rolls onto her side giggling, a second flings it open and the rain pelts in, she squeals, though not in fear, face wet with delight, and she dives onto the floor rolling in gleeful puddles “Man overboard! Help, save our souls!” The bedroom door opens, light streaming in her mother stomps over to close the unrepentant window, clucking and tutting, face tucked to disguise her smile, feet careful to avoid the outline of a boat, drawn and ever redrawn, in chalk around the bed.

You were forty seven when you came back from break with a bag full of a young man's clothes. We laughed as you expounded on the Saturday night merits of your new red jeans combined with a "crisp white shirt" and the potent musk you splashed on like a brute. I told colleagues to be careful when inhaling near you lest they be filled with your sexual potential. Your love for Paul Weller was teenage in its expression, I imagined posters on your bedroom walls based on posters posted on facebook, and you were always the first to like, like a dog that sniffs its own piss in delight. It was funny to see such adolescent excitment in a man with a face like a sun dried teabag. You circled the xmas party tall and grey, a pallid predator, finding the eighteen year old girl, one year older than your daughter, and blagging a kiss before her friend, a good man less than half your age pulled her away and put her in a taxi. "You cock blocked me" said the grown up.
