The Battle of Clontarf in 1014 was one of the fiercest battles in Irish history, creating a sense of Irish identity. Today, across Ireland, we see a “them” cast as invaders, anger sharpened by old myths.

My son (on the left) and his boyfriend at Pride. He’s rocking his usual cheeky grin, glitter and rainbow stripes on his face, and that loud palm shirt I love. His boyfriend’s next to him, matching face paint, tropical tee, and all the joy in the world between them. My daughter at Liverpool Pride, beaming in front of a fierce drag performer in full green and gold regalia with a towering headdress and bold makeup. She’s wrapped in a rainbow flag, glitter on her cheeks, sunflowers in her space buns — completely in her element.

For #PoemsAbout #FierceBattle - not sure if this poem, originally published in Dreich, fits the brief but sometimes battles aren’t noisy and this poem celebrates my mother who chose to belittle an insidious enemy through love and laughter. I’m often reminded that there are no weapons more fierce.

This one originally had a different structure which wasn't working. I actually hate this structure, it makes me uncomfortable (too rectangular!), but the poem needed to be uncomfortable.
Fight or Flight by Dorian David Leigh I don't know where you end and I begin / I don't know where I end and you begin / I pulled you from the heat of a press release to mask the cracks in the walls and now you are the walls / or I am the walls / or we are both the cracks in reality an ouroboros of chaos pulled into / being / the flickering screen shows what is reel / what is real / what is real? / I thought I was holding onto the edge because / I could feel it biting into my hands but that was your teeth / or my teeth / our clashing teeth when what I was holding onto was you / was it you? / and we’re both falling and / I don't know where I end and you begin / I don't know where you end and I begin / pressed together we close our eyes / you close your eyes / I close my eyes / and fight to remember we have wings.

Once visibility was reduced
waves crashed
a citadel of anguish
rolled over my life
left chaos and pain in her wake

Now my sea state has changed
foam does not fill my head
I am no longer sprayed across existence

The surface is smooth
calm
the treatment has worked
