#FirefoxOS
In 2012, I was at Mozilla on the FirefoxOS phone. Stelarc was in town giving a talk, was invited to dinner with him. After talking about the body/tech work I was doing, he visited my workspace the next day. This picture happened.

Mozilla not using this as marketing is what cratered the phone.

once upon a time at a house party i set up a FirefoxOS phone and a FirefoxOS tv and some Very Large Balloons to blow the kids minds.

if you ever wondered why Mozilla's FirefoxOS failed, it's specifically because they wouldn't use my advertising idea.

(Stelarc visited the NP Labs workspace in 2012 right after I'd just gotten the phone dialing for the first time, and I mean what else are you gonna do with an arm ear)

Thinking about it, given the millions of Panasonic Smart TVs running FirefoxOS in the UK, and the dozens of HbbTV web apps I’ve shipped to them over 7 years (that are still in production today!), I might inadvertently be a successful FirefoxOS developer.

i surgery'd a Tickle-me Elmo, put a FirefoxOS phone inside, running a web app that used gUM to listen for a decibel level approximately close to "someone is nearby", would pull a random comment from the day's top Youtube videos and TTS it.

got weird fast, b/c the comments were *awful* 😅😅😅

I have a prototype 'FirefoxOS' phone with a UI that looks astonishingly similar

@fabrice.capyloon.org carries the flame of firefoxos alive in his capyloon project. Not sure how he’s thinking about it these days. (Hi 👋)

iOS and Gboard swipe support is not great. i hacked swiping into FirefoxOS keyboard long ago, so looked at contemporary options, found something cool:

the Futo keyboard community created an open corpus of swipe data using Mozilla Common Voice's Wikipedia dataset!

The most irritating thing of all is Firefox Mobile supports PWAs, but after the fall of FirefoxOS many years ago, they refuse to add it to desktop. Firefox Mobile also has this collections thing... which *does not* sync to desktop.

Like... huh???

KaiOS (a fork of FirefoxOS) is still around and runs on a pile of non-smartphones!

.... last time I checked it required a very old version of firefox ESR to develop apps for.

i have not ruled out it being elaborate ploy to somehow trick me out of my stash of FirefoxOS phones.

I love Moz and a lot of the people who have worked there but their management decisions have always been, like, nuts. I almost got a job there in the FirefoxOS days.

I have a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact that once ran FirefoxOS. It was my favorite little gadget for awhile. It runs some Android variant now, but only connects to wifi, which makes me sad.

Good news: We've been in the future for a decade longer than that, he got the ear in 2006 because I took this picture when he visited me in 2012

And then Mozilla wouldn't use it as a FirefoxOS marketing image because they were fucking cowards.
