@fabrice.capyloon.org carries the flame of firefoxos alive in his capyloon project. Not sure how he’s thinking about it these days. (Hi 👋)

I learned that the experimental "firefoxOS" that Mozilla made has an afterlife as a proprietary fork called KaiOS for feature phones especially in India. It's sort of like a mobile ChromeOS in terms of web tech based apps. Also behold the Nokia banana phone: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_8...

Given that FirefoxOS did a whole smartphone UI in HTML/CSS/JS and got tolerably good performance out of a single wheezing ARM core and 256MB of RAM, it's not the craziest idea, but if on a modern PC you can't outperform a cellphone marketed in developing economies 12 years ago….
You want to know why your thing sucks now? There's a 50/50 chance it is secretly a web browser and site for no good reason instead of a real computer program.

I don't know why we've turned many things that should not be web dev into web dev, but here we are.

"There are no plans to bring WhatsApp to FirefoxOS" was late 2013. Seems to me that's when Telefonica started getting cold feet and by summer 2014, the Movistar promotions had mostly disappeared, replaced by Android One deals. Soon after that would have been a fine time to conclude, IMO.

Yeah. I miss it too. We gave it our all, probably longer than we should have. The idea still holds water, and PalmOS and FirefoxOS are reasonable templates for another shot.

KaiOS (a fork of FirefoxOS) is still around and runs on a pile of non-smartphones!

.... last time I checked it required a very old version of firefox ESR to develop apps for.

I love Moz and a lot of the people who have worked there but their management decisions have always been, like, nuts. I almost got a job there in the FirefoxOS days.

A great event without you. Heres to a #meetup, a #tech #conference or any FirefoxOS device. Just saw this once when overseas, and I concur with NPH

@jrconlin I was a FirefoxOS defender. Because I wanted a way to get out of Android and iOS. I was and still am a Mozillian. I loved the best documentation ever made about the web that was and still is MDN. I'm a big Rust fan. But yes... what happened... Noone was taking the community into […]

I don't do Android. I don't like Android. I even used FirefoxOS so I could have small phone... with no Android.

Android is not evil, compared to usual closed-source stuff. But it is ... quite bad compared to average open-source software, and claims to be open-source.

But I believe Python […]

The most irritating thing of all is Firefox Mobile supports PWAs, but after the fall of FirefoxOS many years ago, they refuse to add it to desktop. Firefox Mobile also has this collections thing... which *does not* sync to desktop.

Like... huh???
