A 150-metre-long island appeared from nowhere on Williston Lake, British Columbia; vanished, then reappeared 20 miles away

B.C. Hydro says it's monitoring for the reappearance of a mysterious island first spotted by boaters 100 kilometres from the W.A.C. Bennett Dam in northeastern B.C.

A floating island the size of two football fields surfaced on a remote British Columbia lake in July, and by August it had vanished.

A floating island, estimated to be around 70 metres wide and 140 metres long, mysteriously appeared in the Williston Reservoir in northern British Columbia before vanishing from satellite imagery. B.C. Hydro confirmed the island's existence through satellite data but could not locate it by August 5. The phenomenon, first spotted by boaters 100 kilometres from the W.A.C. Bennett Dam, has sparked curiosity about its origin and disappearance. Experts suggest the island may have formed from accumulated driftwood and vegetation along the shore, breaking free during high water levels. While B.C. Hydro is monitoring for its possible reappearance, they note no immediate operational impacts. The Williston Reservoir, the seventh-largest in the world, has not been full since 1968, and recent high water levels from snowpack and rainfall have created conditions for such anomalies. Similar floating islands are observed in other reservoirs globally, though this case remains rare in Williston Lake. Local residents and boaters have shared videos and photos of the island, which quickly went viral, highlighting the unexpected natural event. B.C. Hydro relies on public reports to monitor the vast reservoir, as satellite surveillance alone is insufficient. The incident underscores the dynamic interactions between human infrastructure and natural ecosystems.
