#Flunami
Flunami was RIGHT THERE

And cut out the 'flunami', 'super flu', 'worst case scenario' rhetoric (looking at you, NHS England, for the latter two).

It's not helpful. At all.

A short Aussie #flu thread.
IN the few days since my last update July 26th (read all about it virologydownunder.com/a-flunami-in...), detections have risen by 9,231.

Some guy on Newsnight has just said ‘flunami’.

Our community says the ‘flunami’ was inevitable – with many arguing that years of underfunding, workforce pressures and rising demand have left the NHS acutely vulnerable to any sudden spike in winter illness

Australian Influenza and RSV cases update:

Reported Influenza cases for Australia continued to rise for May, but at a steady pace. Whereas up to April they were running at "flunami" pace, it now looks like either a lower or later peak than in 2024 or 2022.

The "super flu" / "flunami" situation being reported in the UK appears to be the normal winter flu peak. Very unhelpful reporting.
This is a year-by-year comparison of hospital admissions with flu using the latest data up to 30 Nov.

Yes, this year’s flu season started a few weeks earlier than normal. But otherwise, its pattern looks very similar to 2022/23 and 2024/25. 3/10

It should never be called "superflu" nor "flunami"
December 12, 2025 at 12:24 PM
The gap between "flunami!" and "a normal flu month" of cases closed in April and looks like it will flip in May.
2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024 each had larger May #influenza detection totals than 2025. While there are still 6 days left in May, detections would have to double in a week to catch up.

Health experts have issued a "flunami" warning as Brits buckle down for Christmas Day, with the general public told to resurrect Covid-era rules to protect one another from a predicted surge of lurgies and major infections.

...pandemic started, but that is likely because of more testing, more rapid testing and greater overall capacity after labs were improved due to COVID-19.

Some factors from 2017 drove Australia's #flunami then. The US then had its own flunami in its 2017-2018 season.

Any of my old followers remember what we nicknamed the 2017 flu season? I recall we used #flunami for 2019's big but much less severe seaosn in Australia, but I have a vague memory that it was a different term for 2017's big flu year.

United States influenza: biggest season in 15 years of data
The United States has been suffering from many influenza virus infections. And it looks like those are translating into a "flunami" of hospitalisations, which has resulted in the US CDC classifying the 2024-2025 flu season as the highest severity season since 2017-2018, with flu hospitalisation rates at their highest in at least 15 years. High numbers of flu infections American clinical laboratory-confirmed flu-positive numbers show Week 6 to be a bit smaller than Week 5 but still huge, with a third of tested samples being positive for a flu virus.

Of course, the worst case scenario is contingent upon the resident doctors' strike. Which is interesting.

And it's now a "FLUNAMI" according to the six o'clock news.

Aghast to hear about a foolish, even dangerous ban on masks in a shopping centre - especially when healthcare is so pro masks at present. I assume they don’t know about the #Flunami ??
