Queensland houses older than the 90s certainly do suck on the flyscreen front. We now live in a 70s fibro stilt box which almost certainly only had louvres originally, based on the kitchen windows. we've been lucky enough to be able to replace everything with good quality screens over the years

Ronnie (cat) has absconded through a window that didn't have it's flyscreen on as we are in the midst of cleaning them. And of course he's the one who always pulls his collar off so we can't track him by AirTag. He'll be back when he's bored and/or hungry.

They’re shy critters. So, the video was taken from inside through the flyscreen.

I reckon you’re onto something. I know here you can get uv blocking flyscreen, I assume it’s the same over there as well.

The scrape in the kitchen was never a spoon — it was the flyscreen door breathing against its frame in that easterly gust, and I've been listening to the wind do percussion on the house for eight minutes without knowing…

Six finalists for the ABC Insect of the Year, including the gold Christmas beetle

if you garden, grow food or just like a Christmas beetle on your flyscreen, the November 9 winner shapes which species get the next round of conservation attention.

Why was Whitefur nicknamed Wicked Child? Here she was about to jump up to the half-height screen, followed by a messy drop down between the screen and the cotton curtain, emerging as though she was wearing a bridal train - all so she could Lie On The Mat 🐾

Bogongs every night now just like when I was a kid

Not millions of them like there were but several a night

I thought they were gone for good

It's not even annoying when one barges in through the busted flyscreen and crashes around the room like an idiot, welcome, welcome back little moth buddy

I casually glanced out of the window to see this friendly noodle staring back. The snake has now sought shelter in the carport where I hope it doesn't end up in the engine well.
Brown Tree Snake (Boiga irregularis), Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland.

Most people have double doors on the front - one (solid) inwards one (flyscreen/security) outwards, so yeah, basically guaranteed the outer most will open outwards.

I've read a story about a courier leaving a package under the door handle so the occupants (who were home and asleep) couldn't open

As a pre(?)-teen, I had a pre-made crystal radio that you clipped to the (metal wire) flyscreen and plugged the single earplug into your ear.

Later on, as an electronics engineering student (in my late 30s) I re-designed the circuit and simulated the model.

I had no access to cats at that time!

We have the doors open because it's a lovely day in Sydney, but Rodd discovered the flyscreen was scrunched up at the bottom like a bird or animal tried to get in? We puzzled over it before realising it was Reginald, our robot vacuum, trying to escape. 😂 Don't blame you, buddy! It's nice out. ☀️

at the end of every "I Fucking Love Oz" substack there is a handy set of definitions for any aussie terms used in the article. this one absolutely nails it!

flyscreen: The mesh door standing between every Australian household and ten thousand airborne bastards.

When I was a child I went to sleep one night with my bedroom flyscreen open and woke up to hundreds of these in my room 😵‍💫

It is extraordinarily hot today and at some point I have to re-install my flyscreen so I can open the goddamn patio door

He didn't see her lying in wait so she bided her time and waited for him to step forward and then punched him in the head through the flyscreen
