I was extremely annoyed with the Tories last Weds and this Mon about their waffling endlessly on, and told them so during the #FootballGovernance debate.
But I'm not sure how engineered this was as some Labour peers went on a long time too. Was it a Tory plot? 1/2

FIFA President Faces Criticism Over Leadership and Private Investment Plans
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has faced renewed criticism from UEFA, CONCACAF, and AFC, which accused him of prioritizing personal authority over collective governance. The confederations condemned his controversial proposal to introduce private investment into FIFA competitions, including World Cups, which was withdrawn after UEFA threatened to boycott the tournaments. They argued that leadership in football should not be about holding power but fostering unity and accountability. Infantino's critics emphasized that the success of recent initiatives like expanded tournaments and resource distribution were collective achievements, not individual efforts. The letter highlighted concerns over a lack of transparency and openness under his leadership, urging a return to collaborative decision-making. This marks a significant challenge for Infantino as he navigates scrutiny over his management style and strategic decisions impacting global football governance.

Uefa rallies member associations against Fifa’s World Cup investment plan amid growing governance concerns
Uefa has succeeded in assembling an unusually broad coalition of European football associations to oppose Fifa president Gianni Infantino’s proposed Fifa Forward Enterprise investment plan, which would involve selling a stake in future World Cup revenues to private investors. The article describes this unity as a significant achievement for Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin, but also stresses that the alliance remains fragile and could weaken if Fifa gains more time to persuade smaller or less wealthy federations.According to the report, Fifa intends to push ahead with the proposal before a 19 September deadline and has already defended the process by accusing the media of disrupting consultations. Uefa officials believe many national associations were angered by what they saw as a rushed and insufficiently transparent approach. The article also links the growing opposition to an earlier dispute involving Folarin Balogun, when Donald Trump reportedly asked Infantino to overturn the USA striker’s suspension during the World Cup. That episode is said to have increased concerns within several European associations about Fifa’s governance and independence.Support for Uefa’s position may be extending beyond Europe. The Asian Football Confederation has publicly stated that the proposal lacks the broad consensus required to proceed, while Concacaf has expressed concerns about governance, consultation and timing, although neither confederation has yet endorsed a boycott.Despite the unprecedented resistance, the article argues that Infantino is unlikely to resign quickly. It recalls that he survived previous confrontations with Uefa and later emerged politically stronger. Uefa and its allies are therefore focused on stopping the investment plan before the first threatened boycott of a Fifa tournament could take effect in early September. The dispute is presented as a pivotal struggle over the future governance and financial direction of world football.

Fifa’s Plan to Sell World Cup Stakes Sparks Global Concern Over Football’s Future
The article critically examines FIFA's proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, framing it as a potential existential crisis for global football. It highlights concerns over governance, financial exploitation, and the erosion of football's social value. Critics argue that allowing private investment could prioritize profit over the sport's cultural significance, leading to long-term negative consequences such as talent drain and institutional decay. The piece also notes Uefa's condemnation of the plan, emphasizing that the World Cup is not FIFA's to sell. The article raises questions about accountability, with insiders suggesting that current stakeholders may benefit short-term while future generations face systemic harm. It underscores the broader tension between football's traditional values and corporate interests, warning that once the game is commodified, reversing this shift becomes nearly impossible.

Liberal Democrats Call for FA and UEFA to Withdraw from FIFA Over Integrity Concerns
The Liberal Democrats have called on the English Football Association (FA) and UEFA to withdraw from FIFA, accusing the organisation of undermining the integrity of football. Led by Sir Ed Davey, the party argues FIFA's governance has become corrupt, citing recent controversies such as the overturning of a match ban for an American player due to U.S. President Donald Trump's intervention. Financial concerns, including inflated ticket prices and potential revenue from hydration breaks, have also fueled criticism. FIFA faces backlash for its handling of the World Cup, with UEFA condemning its decisions as 'unprecedented' and 'unjustifiable'. The Lib Dems propose a coordinated exit from FIFA to establish a transparent governing body prioritising fans. While FIFA defends its practices, critics argue its commercial focus has eroded trust, with calls for reform or structural change. The debate highlights tensions between football's governing bodies and the need for accountability, as FIFA's leadership faces scrutiny over its management of global football affairs.
