If the Cathedral is surreal, then the Chapel (!) Saint Michel d'Aiguilhe is downright absurd. Placed on a huge rugged rock, it overlooks the city.

The medieval town of Le Puy-en-Velay (or Puch im Welsgau if you ask certain overtired travellers) is absolutely stunning. The quiet Ville Haute with the Cathedral looks like straight out of a historic or fantasy movie.

The line to Puy-en-Velay is a classic french massif central single track line along a river valley. The Loire is quiet and reflects the low late afternoon sunlight.

Arrival in Le Puy-en-Velay with its impressive skyline. As in many small town stations in France, the station was recently moderniesed. The station building got a fresh layer of paint and all platforms were raised to 55cm.

Arrival in Lyon Part-Dieu. There would be a good connection to the South by AVE. But, of course, we're taking the "direct way". Which means we have 30 mins bto get a first piece of Viennoiserie, before our TER towards Saint-Étienne. It's a Regio 2N double decker with a lot of capacity.

At least this gives us time to explore the new and huge pôle intermodal with 16 bus bays for regional bus services and two loooong platforms for the local bus lines, which serve as bike path at the same time.

Finally, 40 mins delayed, our train arrives from Clermont-Ferrand. An AGC waits for its departure for Saint-Étienne. This would be a perfect connection in both directions - but of course this is pure coincidence and works just because of the delay. An accidental node - peak France! 🙄 🇨🇵

Now, let's face the problem: A landslide is blocking the Cévenol route to Nîmes, there's bus replacement between Langeac and Langogne, exactly that part of the line which I've never been on. 🤬

OH: «If I had to move to Clermont-Ferrand, I'd look for a flat in the Jemonte-Jevalide neighbourhood. It seems to be extremely well connected as all the bus lines are going there!»

Changing trains in Genève to a very packed double AGC consist towards Lyon. We really need an hourly service with a high capacity train here! And a more welcoming and wider access to the platform.
