Hear me out: what if we built schools that were closer where people lived, created car-free zones around schools and encouraged walkability, cycling, and other sustainable transport.
And provided #FreeTransit for kids to use public transit year-round to get to school & camps. Build transit culture

I agree, and would add that all else equal the ~shift in emphasis from workers riding transit at peak times to people (friend groups, families including children) riding at non-peak times favors state and city governments shifting transit funding from fares to general tax revenue. #freetransit

Well, summer not being over isn’t quite true. Some school started last week, some this week and everybody else starts next week so I might as well be.

This summer, in a pilot project, we allowed youth to ride OC Transpo for free.
The results have been terrific. In the summer of 2025, youth made about 130,000 trips on public transit. So far this summer, that has more than tripled, to 456,000 trips. And the summer is not even over.
