The Workers Circle and Sanctuary of the South will continue expanding Freedom Advocates beyond Alligator Alcatraz and fighting to ensure that every detained person has access to due process and legal representation as well as the grassroots power necessary to realize their freedom.

Manuel* and Paul* were recently detained at Alligator Alcatraz, surviving brutal and inhumane conditions. But this week they walked free from ICE detention in Jena, LA and Miami, FL thanks to Freedom Advocates, a new program founded by the Workers Circle and Sanctuary of the South that unites legal advocacy and grassroots advocacy to free people unlawfully detained by ICE. These are the first victories for the Freedom Advocates Program which began in May by deploying qualified immigration attorneys to provide universal legal consultations to people detained at Alligator Alcatraz and pursuing release on every viable case as fast as possible. To date the program has served approximately 75 individuals, and pursued release and asylum claims for dozens of individuals. Importantly, that legal support follows them wherever they may now be detained following the closure of Alligator Alcatraz. Katie Blankenship, founder of Sanctuary of the South underscored, “Legal representation can make all the difference in the immigration system, which is operating in a historically lawless fashion. Individuals stripped of due process and denied access to the courts is the norm these days, not the exception. These cases and the Freedom Advocates Program overall demonstrates not only the life-changing impact of legal representation in ICE detention, but also the power of grassroots advocacy, including those resisting from inside ICE cages, to fight back and hold the constitutional line.” “This victory proves that legal representation saves lives and protects freedom,” said Ann Toback, CEO of the Workers Circle. “Two people are going home to their families today because they had access to counsel. “Alligator Alcatraz is a failed experiment in cruelty by the Trump and DeSantis administrations. For their own political ends, they tried to convince Americans to hate and fear immigrants and tolerate or justify brutality toward them. They failed. They failed here and will continue to fail across the nation because ordinary people said ‘No! This is not who we are. This is not the America we will become.’ Together we stood as immigrants and citizens alike, reflecting the strength of America, a belief in our Constitution, and the commitment to go the distance, shoulder-to-shoulder for freedom and justice. Alligator Alcatraz is now shut down due to the relentless action of thousands of people who refused to stand idly by. Through forty-seven weeks of freedom vigils, organized by the Workers Circle and supported by dozens of faith, civic, community, and immigrant organizations, we exposed the brutal abuses, including torture, and ongoing violations of due process happening to people held inside Alligator Alcatraz. Thousands upon thousands of people contacted lawmakers, wrote letters to the editor, and mobilized their neighbors. We denounced the brutality, lawlessness, chaos, and corruption that was Alligator Alcatraz. We, the people, made it politically toxic. On Sunday, Justo joined Arianne at the vigil outside Alligator Alcatraz, where week after week, she showed up to advocate for him. They held hands and faced the detention camp that had separated them for more than six months. “Nobody deserves what’s happened to them and what’s continuing to happen inside of Alligator Alcatraz,” Arianne said. “And if the government and DeSantis can be proud of having an operation like that, then I should be proud of all of my efforts to get it shut down.” I spoke to Justo for the first time this week. He was out of the hospital and living with Arianne. Despite his slurred speech, he sounded upbeat. While thrilled to be with his family, he is worried about the friends he left behind. He described the frozen bologna and cheese sandwiches eaten during 15-minute meal breaks, the mosquito and spider infestations that left detainees covered in bites, and the anxiety of waiting hours to make one phone call to Arianne and his two other children. He witnessed fights break out, and people trying to take their lives. “We were 32 people in one cage,” he recalled. For months, he said, he went without insulin. He spent much of his time at the medical unit shackled to a bed and escorted to the restroom by guards. “Alligator Alcatraz has scarred me like nothing else in my life. It broke me mentally and emotionally,” he added. “Some people may say I’m exaggerating…but I lived through those moments.”
