#FrescoFriday - A beautiful fresco from Herculaneum, but sadly one whose precise provenance is unknown. The scene is focussed on a female musician, holding a lyre and plucking a cithara. The drapery is delightful! #Art #AncientBluesky 🏺

#FrescoFriday - An absolute corker of a Roman fresco with this panel showing the myth of Admetus and Alcestis: likely from the Augusteum at Herculaneum, discovered 25 November 1739. What dazzling details! #Archaeology #AncientBluesky 🏺

#FrescoFriday - The eponymous panel from Casa dell'Amore Punito, Pompeii (VII.2.23): discovered 5 August 1844. Cupid is brought to Venus, seemingly to be chastised for firing his darts willy-nilly. Naughty boy! #Pompeii #AncientBluesky 🏺

#FrescoFriday from the MANN with this one thought to be Helios.

From Villa Arianna at Stabiae.

Helios is suspected as what we see here is a male deity of the light, sitting on a chariot with a radial crown and sceptre.

A stunning fresco which has something quite modern about it!

Let’s celebrate #FrescoFriday with as much verve as this lady who, given she’s riding a dolphin, may well be an incarnation of Venus (who had a penchant for such activities though usually in a greater state of divine undress).

The Tomb of the Diver can be found in what was the ancient Greek city of Poseidonia (Paestum to the Romans).

Discovered in June 1968, the tomb contains five different frescoes. Thought to date to roughly 500-470BC.
