What does “friendshoring” look like if we have no friends?

Friendshoring was a thing
Arti Grover & Pierre-Louis Vezina find an increasing role for political alignment or differences in shaping companies' location decisions. Geopolitical differences have a larger negative impact on #FDI today than they did 10 years ago.

Today’s Trade Secrets: the day friendshoring died.

It’s not even that the Biden administration sold out its allies to help the US steel industry. It’s that it’s not going to help the steel industry either.

NEW from me:

Mexico and Canada wanted to anchor America’s “friend-shoring” pushes. Instead, Trump’s tariffs threaten to send them into recession.

It could mark the end of an era when the US sought economic cooperation with its closest allies

Friendshoring defense would be a good idea but it needs to come in tandem with longstanding changes to how CAF does procurement and legal fights over procurement that end up delaying much needed equipment
Carney's made some of the right noises. I'd like to see a detailed platform (can't remember the last time anyone had one tbh) first. I think we need to focus on trying to get agreements with French, German, and Korean manufacturers to license kit and build factories.

agreed. but i think the question here comes down to international political economy and geostrategy though: do we rely on friendshoring? or does every nation engage in their own level of strategic industrial development?

and the thing is that if you want to address international overcapacity...
But Chinese overcapacity is real and it is a weapon. Beijing has signaled it is ready and willing to use that leverage. Countries that can onshore manufacturing, must. Those that cannot will be swamped by Chinese exports and will de-industrialize rapidly.

Leo Lewis really captures what the US Steel affair has meant for Japan as far as coming to terms with the reality of US protectionism.

This should not preclude Europe onshoring/friendshoring some supply chains - APIs, critical minerals, semiconductors and the chemicals to make them - to insulate itself from coercion.

This applies specifically to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Hopefully this at least means from now on I won’t have to listen to the dumbest, most gullible people out there go on about how the protectionists are interested in friendshoring

Tbh I can’t take any talk about Chinese supply chains seriously because there’s no mass constituency for friendshoring and domestication of all but the highest value add industries is a laughable endeavor
March 26, 2026 at 9:48 PM
"the US should onshore manufacturing wherever possible so we are not dependent on a hostile nation" is not an unreasonable position, which is why Biden was doing so much of it

But this was so far beyond that *and* completely ignores friendshoring

1 desperdiçar a onda de friendshoring

2 passar vergonha

Something I hadn't realized until going through the trade data recently is that Mexico has surpassed China to become the #1 source of US computer imports. Imports of computers are close to passing cars to become the #1 Mexican import, which is insane if you know the size of the Mexican auto industry
