#Fsync
Comes with fsync. Fsync: it definitely syncs the files to disk.

Forgetting to fsync: it's a rite of passage.

The 0.12 version will allow setting 'fsync' option per buffer, instead of only global.

This can be useful when writing to a slow filesystem.

I am writing an application that really cares about durability of created files (a Certificate Transparency log), and... oof.

I fsync the file. I fsync the directory. Ok.

But... how do I test it? Even targeting a specific filesystem, I have to make VMs and try to race killing them?

Hm, running "dd if=/dev/nvme2n1 of=/dev/nvme1n1 bs=64M conv=fsync status=progress" and it is super slow 40MB/s

Copied 60GB out of 2TB.

"iostat -x 1" shows that the source drive is 100% utilized with no activity.

Suggestions welcome

when database founders meet, it's called an fsync

it also doesn't need to fsync because it uses mutexes

finally read the paper <Can Application Recover from fsync Failures?>. surprised to see the fact that `fsync()` will simply mark the dirty page as clean after you got EIO error, so an success retry of `fsync()` will not finally persist your data, but failed to persist your data silently 😮

fsync é igual selinux e ipv6: nasceu pra ser desativado!

For those using Proton for Linux/SteamDeck. Valve has finally integrated nysync. A closer representation to Window's synchronization primitives (application threading).

This replaces fsync and esync, giving windows apps/games a more stable runtime and, in some cases, can run better than Windows.

We already include fsync, which should be as fast or faster as ntsync. We developed ntsync as a general solution that'd be acceptable in upstream Wine, but there's no urgency in including it in the Deck / SteamOS kernel.

committing to the bit? what do i look like, fsync?

> fsync doesn’t save all your work to disk. If you modified the parent directory by creating a new file, you have to fsync the parent too

fsync me lembra mto o pessoal

The authors of "Can Applications Recover from fsync Failures?" wrote a tool to help test disk failures (github.com/WiscADSL/dm-...) and mention some others in the "Related Work" section.

The Tigerbeetle team also often talks about FS durability and simulation testing (github.com/tigerbeetle/...).

Hot take: if your entire software update process requires more than a single fsync(), you’re doing it wrong.

I would also accept zero fsyncs (with the possibility that after a power outage you might have to redo the update).

We need more function colours tbqh. The kernel already has fsync, but we can at least take async-esync and gsync-zsync
