The US invited Rumesya Ozturk to study at Tufts on a Fulbright, a program that promotes "mutual understanding" between America and the world.
As a Fulbrighter, this video makes me ill. We certainly aren't promoting mutual understanding.
We're promoting the idea that dissent is not welcome here.

As a former Fulbrighter this is so deeply sad. The program changer my life. It brought a kid from Ohio into the world. It forged lasting friendships. It should not be destroyed.
Just got an email from the Fulbright Association. As of right now, funding has been cut off to 12,500 US citizens currently abroad and and more than 7,400 foreigner scholars and students in the United States

My grandfather was a forestry prof at Umaine+ a fulbrighter as well. Harold Young. was active 40s-70s.

Özturk’s detention is esp. sadly ironic because Fulbright is intended to be ambassadorial; participants promote the (supposed) cultural and political values of the US. By expressing her convictions in an opinion essay, Özturk was doing what a model Fulbrighter should

As a former Deputy Chair of Fulbright NZ and a former Fulbrighter myself I am dismayed to see this.
I remember the panic last year that Fulbright grantees were being abandoned overseas and I had to explain, no I'm literally a fulbrighter, that's not happening, and getting people replying insisting I was wrong
The incentives on Bluesky right now in a screenshot. My post explaining why, as a Fulbrighter overseas I’m annoyed, but not worried and am still getting paid has 63 likes. A reply from a user literally called worst case scenario saying no, I’m wrong, actually I’m screwed, has 70 likes.

As a former Fulbright Scholar (in Chile), I personally understand how terrifying this is. U.S. citizens around the world & foreign nationals in the U.S. — all Fulbright Scholars — have now had their incomes eliminated & are stranded.

I was a Fulbrighter- I thoroughly enjoyed my American student experience. However, I would hesitate to recommend that a young person study in the US at the moment

I’m a Fulbrighter, & while those in my cohort went on to prestige I fell into madness & poverty that set me back, but it changed my life, I met my partner, wrote a book, learned languages, became bound with the fate of a different part of the world. That’s one of the best things this government had.

As a recent Fulbrighter, this is just insane. Are US students being left abroad with no stipends and return airfare?
I mean what happens if you're in a foreign country on a student/research visa, which is to say you're not working (or rather, this is your work), and this is the money you were relying on for the month?
I'm not sure how many Fulbright Scholars this applies to. But some subset of them were just informed that their next monthly stipend check will only cover 1 week. "partial stipend equivalent". Yeah, obviously not a big populist issue. But still. Destruction for its own sake.

Not that we should expect better at this point but this is pointlessly cruel and evil, speaking as a former Fulbrighter. People who get monthly payments simply won’t have the resources to get by. And it goes beyond individuals - you can bring spouses and kids with you, I did.
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program invites graduate students from abroad to come study in the US and guarantees funding for them to do so paid in a monthly stipend. Yesterday, some FFSP scholars received notification that they're only getting a week of their stipend.

As a former Fulbrighter to the US I am deeply worried about what I am reading. Fulbright used to advocate citizen diplomacy. Now excellent scholars all over the world are left in trouble?

As a former (two-time) Fulbrighter, I can assure that the stipends are very small. At full size it is difficult to live on, but cutting the amount by 3/4 will force those who aren't wealthy to leave the program. Not as serious as, say, gutting global anti-malaria programs but a blow nonetheless.
