I just found out that around 20% of the neanderthal genome still exists today in living people!!

No individual person has more than 3 or 4% but we don't all have the same bits. If you add up all the bits we've found, about a fifth of the Neanderthal genome is still present on earth today.

Inside me there are two wolves. One of them has a 15 genome edits the other 20 genome edits. Neither of them is a dire wolf.

Plenty studies showing that your postcode is a better predictor of your health outcomes than your genome.
The BBC & Telegraph are trailing Wes Streeting’s technophile health plans, including genomic mapping at birth.
Is this really gonna transform the NHS into a prevention service within 10 yrs, as Wes claims? For v rare genetic conditions, praps. But for the real burden of disease?

Thoughts, #medsky?

We sequenced the genome of 'desert ginseng' (Cistanche deserticola) - a leafless parasitic plant that gave up photosynthesis - and found it lost huge chunks of its own genome…but started stealing genes from its host!

Thanks to my collaborators Prof Huang + her talented team👏🏻

What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

8% of the human genome is made of viral sequences, and another 35-50% are virus-like sequences with the ability to hop around your genome.

For comparison, only 1.5-3% of your genome contains genes.

We're basically a vehicle for viruses.
What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

When the Navy contracted Ballard's team to locate two nuclear submarines lost in the Atlantic, they used the hunt for the Titanic as a cover story and it was fairly inconvenient that Ballard found the wreck in addition to both submarines.
What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

The President of the United States of America uas unilateral authority to fire off nuclear weapons with no legal oversight from anyone.
