Until this week I thought all gorse was Gorse. Not so! This, adorning a Cornish cliff top, must be Western Gorse (Ulex gallii)? #wildflowerID #wildflowerhour @bsbibotany.bsky.social
A deeply indented coastline with the cliff top in the foreground almost completely covered with low growing mounds of dark green foliage with bright yellow flowers. A spiny dark green shrub generously scattered with clusters of bright yellow-gold flowers. Behind, out of focus, are more of the same against a backdrop of blue green sea with rows of white-topped Atlantic waves rolling in.

This #WednesdayWildflower is Ulex gallii, Gorse. Weird to see this when it’s not invasive!!

Common Heather (Calluna vulgaris) and Western Gorse (Ulex gallii) looking beautiful up on Dartmoor last Friday. Also saw some gorse overgrown with the parasite Dodder (Cuscuta epithymum), which has tiny pale flowers and tangles of red thread-like stems.

I'm not familiar with Surrey heaths but the BSBI distribution map for U. galii shows it in parts of Surrey - Ulex gallii distribution map (BSBI) share.google/Vv5FMGD997pS.... It would be worth contacting your local plant recorder to find out more (or local plant atlas, if there is one).

@jeremybartlett.bsky.social I was researching gorse as I've found decent quantities of Ulex minor on sites i am managing in Surrey. Given that geography, would this largely rule out the likelihood of there being U. gallii present too, at least naturally?

Daily doodle 198, caterpillar. I am very bad at watercolors (and these being super cheap didn't help), but I just wanted to confirm the Forever Ink's waterproofness 👌

Reference by Olli Pihlajamaa

Caterpillar of the bedstraw hawk-moth Hyles Gallii, illustrated in black ink and watercolor. It's a cute and plump leafy green thing with some yellow-white stripes running vertically along its body, decorated with large orange spots on the sides and smaller white dots along the belly. It also has a red spike-like appendage on its butt and tiny little black eyes on its round green head. It's illustrated crawling on a branch with some narrow leaves. A cheap watercolor palette, paintbrush and a white gel pen can be seen next to the drawing. Inked lineart of the hawk-moth caterpillar. Next to the drawing are a bottle of Diamine's Forever Ink in Raven (black), and a delicate glass dip pen used for the inks.

Horsmakiitäjä on Deilephila elpenor.

Meet the Bedstraw Hawkmoth, nature's flex you never noticed 🐛

The plump caterpillar carries pale eyespots and a little tail horn, then becomes a swift moth that hovers at flowers like a hummingbird.
