staff immediately. It was never a hotel & was the gatehouse for a much larger building on Whitefriargate called the George Hotel that was demolished. The building is said to date back to 1683 but Historic England dates it as mid 18th century. It was refronted circa 1870 & has mid & late 20th

Why the delay? The dig kept finding castle: gatehouse towers, the drawbridge pier, a six-metre moat, a 12.5m medieval well still holding water, Civil War stakes and two steel furnaces built into the ruins. They are Grade II listed, so the park has been redesigned around them.

Donnington Castle, close to Newbury. Built 1386 and almost completely buggered (bar the gatehouse) in 1646 during the Civil War.

Having used "The Compleat Visitter’s Gide to Sentennel, with Mappe" to get to the Market Square, the next step is to go shopping.
Tim closed the Gide. “What a curious book,” he thought to himself. He crossed the Stone Bridge and, after showing his visitor permit to the guards at the Gatehouse, headed up the busy road to the Market Square. He didn’t actually walk into the square, but more sort of found a gap in the crowd and pushed hard. The market was not so much a shopping experience as retail assault and wholesale battery. The grievous bodily harm to the wallet came as standard. Row upon row of stalls stood packed into what was quite a sizeable open space, or would have been if it wasn’t for the hundreds of stalls. What space didn’t have a stall on it had someone standing with a tray or, at a pinch, large pockets. The pressing crowd filled the remaining gaps in the same way the sea fills the ocean. There were stalls selling groceries, stalls selling ironmongery and stalls selling bric-a-brac. Stalls selling fruit and veg, fabrics, sausages, pies, fish and cheese. Stalls selling haberdashery, timber, consumer electronics, salt, oatmeal and spices. Stalls selling every commodity imaginable and all doing a roaring trade.

I was also briefly institutionalized in a hospital made from a big stately house that was…. Not un-castle like. But like obvs so huge vaulted ceilings or flying buttresses. But it did have a gatehouse, stables and was on the mountain
