luckily i had 1 prior generation that hadn't been gced yet (i just came back from a 2 week trip so the gc timer nuked the rest) so I just used that to try things until I got it working

So, Rust used to have Erlang-like multitasking, back in the 0.x days: task-local heaps with GCed @ pointers vs. the exchange heap with unique ~ pointers, segmented stacks, etc. But they never got real GC (vs. refcount+CC) working, and IIRC was stuck on N:1 threading because N:M never worked right.

LeakCanary has framework specific knowledge and can report objects as "leaking" / "not leaking" / "unknown" based on state (e.g. an activity having a "destroyed" boolean field).
"Leaking" means "should be been GCed but is retained".

You can create weakrefs to break cycles but you have to do that explicitly because everything is refcounted.
(technically refcounting is a type of GC? But when people say "GCed", they almost universally mean tracing GC. If they meant refcounting, they'd have said refcounting!)

I mean that's true. But also if you like Rust, there are definitely GCed languages that would probably appeal to you more than Go. Although you may not be able to get your place of employment to sign off on them.

I learned that lesson with a personal project that relied on a gruntfile. Figured I'd remember how those worked. Nope, the moment we stopped using them at work my brain GCed that info 🗑️

I think they game changered them as an escalation measurement? Like the way I am looking at it is like "Yeah Open the Armory is fine because its narrow and Sorcery speed." Enlighted is GCed because Its a swiss army knife that can deal with most problems and Instant speed.
