#GENAM
"been" and "stay" gloss into more or less the same set of phrases in GenAm, represent senses of time that are functionally equivalent in GenAm and which GenAm exclusive speakers kinda struggle with

trolls sound like modern nebraska accents, a bit off from GenAM but obviously related to it. ogres, oh, let's say chicago

a thing that has stuck with me 4ever abt pop linguistics is that you'll hear factoids about time-sense and language all day long but you don't hear anyone claiming time-sense differs between people who speak GenAm and AAVE at home despite AAVE having several temporal modes GenAm lacks any concept of

writing in GenAm gets tiresome after a while

"Well, but why should I care if every femme character's resting pitch has been yoinked upward?"

It further codifies norms about what voices are "allowed" in [xyz media], which in turn diminishes the perceived viability of deeper, more textured, non-GenAm, non-cis, and otherwise "atypical" voices. 🤷🏻
We've seen a tanking up of pitch in feminine roles. When their only purpose is attractiveness to 18-25 year old men, there's much less range in what those characters are. So anyone who doesn't have a squeaky girl voice gets passed over. There are female baritones. We don't hear them.

It's also kinda funny to theorize that GenAm spread because of Hollywood and American media, movies, TV shows, etc., because I don't know how to explain to you that actors are not born and raised in California like purebred dogs. People from all over MOVE to Cali as an adult to BECOME an actor.

The thing about Baltimore is people will speak in GenAm and then once a day bust out a single word pronounced unlike it is pronounced anywhere else, or a piece of slang you have only heard in a John Waters movie. And then they will return to sounding like a tv broadcaster.
Calling it rocket is from the French. My dad in Baltimore grew up calling rocket despite the very Italian population there. I was surprised.

I actually like the GenAm R sound but it’s relatively rare across languages and not all English dialects have it either.

GenAm English sometimes does (technically) have 2 R-like sounds which are /ɹ/ & /ɾ/

One of the more on-brand things I've done this week:

- Hear new audio from a game whilst coworking with friends
- Half-jokingly go "I hear you, Midwesterner!" at an otherwise-GenAm actor because of how they said "bag"
- Laugh at myself
- Look up the actor; he's from CA, but his mom's Minnesotan

I keep getting knocked sidewise by the fact that I speak a rhotic dialect and don’t always put a little glide in front or my “u” sounds (compare GenAm vs RP pronunciations of “news”) but JRRT assumed his readers would.
