A small Thai satellite tests China's next big space export
The real significance of Thailand’s latest small satellite launch may lie in what stayed on the ground. On 25 August 2026 (Opens in new window), a Chinese Long March-6C rocket carried (Opens in new window) Lingzhi-09 – also known as GISTDA CubeSat-1 – into orbit for Thailand’s Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency, GISTDA (Opens in new window). The satellite was built by GalaxySpace (Opens in new window), a Beijing-based commercial company founded in 2018 (Opens in new window) that produces communications and remote-sensing satellites at industrial scale. Yet GalaxySpace provided much more than a spacecraft. The package included (Opens in new window) ground systems and training for Thai engineers and university students. GalaxySpace also sent teams (Opens in new window) to Thailand to help build and test the ground system. The spacecraft is the visible centrepiece, but the systems, skills and supplier relationships left behind could shape Thailand’s space sector for far longer. GalaxySpace describes the project (Opens in new window) as the first complete, in-orbit satellite delivery by a Chinese commercial space company to a Southeast Asian customer. More than a corporate milestone, it offers an early test of whether China’s emerging commercial space sector can turn domestic...

Thailand hotspots jump nearly 50% y-o-y as GISTDA joins Chiang Mai haze crisis meeting amid sharp April surge
Thailand recorded 133,548 hotspots between January 1 and April 19, 2026, up from 89,520 during the same period in 2025, an increase of nearly 50%, according to satellite data from the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), as authorities step up efforts to address forest fires, haze, and PM2.5 pollution. GISTDA joined a high-level meeting in Chiang Mai on April 20, chaired by Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, where it presented satellite monitoring and predictive systems designed to support more proactive management of fire-related and heat-related hotspots.

Thailand battles forest fires as hot spots in Myanmar threaten to worsen kingdom's haze situation
BANGKOK - Thailand’s wildfire and haze situation remains a serious concern, with satellite data showing 1,488 hotspots nationwide on March 23, most of them concentrated in forest areas. The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency, or GISTDA, said data from the Suomi NPP satellite using the VIIRS system found that more than 80 per cent of the hotspots were located in forest zones, underlining the growing threat to ecosystems and the worsening build-up of PM2.5 pollution in the atmosphere. Forest areas account for most hotspots in Thailand Of the 1,488 hotspots detected across Thailand, 614 were found in conservation forests, the highest number among all land categories, followed by 583 in national reserved forests. Agricultural areas recorded 105 hotspots, while communities and other areas accounted for 90. Agricultural land reform areas reported 87 hotspots, and roadside areas a further 9. The data suggest that forest fires remain the main driver of the country’s current haze problem, with the concentration of hotspots in wooded areas posing a direct risk to both environmental systems and air quality. Myanmar and Laos remain major regional concerns Thailand is not the only country facing severe wildfire conditions. GISTDA said several neighbouring countries in the region...
