Google replaced pushing Git tags for certain source code with obtaining source code via Google Drive after making a request through Google Forms. It's completely ridiculous and they've gradually become very slow at handling requests. They're in clear violation of the GPLv2 now.

Android 16 QPR1 is finally being pushed to the Android Open Source Project. This should have happened on 2025-09-03. We migrated to full Android 16 QPR1 kernel code (GPLv2 tarball) and firmware in September. We couldn't migrate userspace to QPR1 without it being pushed to AOSP.

A question for the hivemind: if you have a project licensed GPLv2, is the documentation a derivative work that must also be licensed GPLv2 or is it legally acceptable for those docs to be closed?

there is libresprite which takes from when aseprite used GPLv2 and went along it's own way of development while still retaining good things github.com/LibreSprite/... and they have releases so you don't have to compile anything yourself

like, having your code stolen sucks, having people completely spit on your GPLv2 (or proprietary) works sucks. code theft in homebrew scenes is a problem, i get it! but it is a much worse problem for a company to be threatening legal action for harmless speech that is not infringing on any rights...

The form-to-Drive-tarball flow replacing signed git tags is absurd for GPLv2 code, and squashing history into one commit kills git bisect for anyone debugging downstream. Weeks of turnaround on top of that makes it hard to read as anything but deliberate.

FlorisBoard, HeliBoard and other traditional open source keyboard apps exist too. There are a lot of projects. In the future, we plan to fork one of the more permissively licensed ones (where GPLv2 qualifies as permissive enough but GPLv3 does not) to replace AOSP Keyboard.

I simply cannot envision a reasoning that overcomes the following for me:
* The environmental destruction
* The suffering of coders who refuse to embrace AI
* The blatant theft of GPLv2 licensed open source code
* The direct funneling of money to companies that want to destroy all artists' careers
