Vehicles with over 5,000 GVWR are exempt from bumper height rules here, the headlight rules still apply but they're 54 inches, even then our police aren't funded enough to enforce traffic violations let alone stuff like this so they're all functionally legal, including this one

coincidentally I may pick up a half cord of firewood in my Crosstrek hatchback today
only rated 1500 lbs towing but 1450 lbs cargo capacity (≅ Toyota Tacoma), I think because Subaru uses many of the same components across its lineup so the smaller Crosstrek has a higher GVWR than you'd guess

IMO anything over 6,000# GVWR should require a Class B CDL.
Would cut down on fashion trucks and school drop off 3-row SUVs real quick, boosting road and pedestrian safety.

I wanted to highlight this because I think only rich people who want to avoid paying taxes know about a loophole that explains why the big SUVs and EVs often have a GVWR of just over 6000 pounds. GVWR is the weight of the vehicle plus max cargo, passenger, and any tongue weight from a towed trailer.
Oversized vehicles were sold to the public by American car companies to get around mpg and safety regulations through an exemption for trucks that was geared to rural agricultural use. Vehicles like the Cooper mini -too expensive - and Fiat 500 haven’t caught on.

Just do what they do in Europe. Anything over 3.5t GVWR needs the equivalent of a CDL to drive it. You can buy a 40ft diesel pusher motorhome, or a huge truck to tow your boat or horse trailer, but you need to take a test to prove you're competent to drive it.
