Figured it out. In the Build Settings dialog there is "Hybrid Subdivision" If it is on, it produces these weird artifacts in single or tiled builds. Here's the setting, and example height maps with the setting set to off, faster, and balanced.

Been cooking in #Gaea2 now to take it into Unreal and see if I can live a dream

When I have my moments, I love to build some custom mountains in Gaea2 and then import it into Godot to fly or walk around. 4x4km terrain using a height and colormap with the awesome terrain3d plugin for Godot.
